Excellent
If you've read my review on The Big Chill, I won't have to remind you of my love affair with food. Ask my parents, ask my husband - hell, ask my tailor who keeps having to alter my clothes
due to my ever changing size!
Anyway, since this is a review about Sagar, lets talk South Indian shall we?
My image of sagar began and ended with Shashi Kapoor rendering this beautifully romantic song to Dimple. I now prefer to relate the word to the restaurant.
What can I say that will do this humble yet oh so delectable eatery justice??
The food: Shimbly awezum! :) if I say anything more, it will take away from the effect that these words have.
The price: Since the dosa culture is relatively nascent in North India, I forgive the slightly steep prices of this common man's fare.
The ambience: I can't say that a Sagar or Sagar Ratna will win the best architectural/interior award this year or any year for that matter but it's functional. For heaven's sake, if I wanted designer insipid dosa, I?d go to the next five star hotel in sight!
So, keeping that in mind, prepare yourself for a basic room with Formica walls and acceptable lighting, the fragrance of agarbatti and marigold flowers and the over-powering smell of sambhar.
All in all, a must visit. Just for good food's sake. It's a no-nonsense wholesome eatery.
p.s: I strongly recommend the sambhar? don't think I've ever tasted something as good.

Good
I stumbled into The Big Chill close to 6 years ago by sheer fate - and a rumbling tummy. I had attended a Reception hosted at one of the Embassies and was served the usual vinegar (that they pass off as wine) and finger food (which is a ’’lah-dee-dah name for snacks but sometimes actually resembles baby fingers!) Now I am a good eater. No, I’m a great eater and some people could term me as a ’’foodie’’. So since I was hungry and it was pretty late, I just went in.
Its firstly the decor that hits you. Its absolutely fantastic. The husband - wife duo who own the place (and are now buddies as I am possibly their most frequent customer) have actually collected a lot of these during their stay in London and then ordered the rest from various poster places. Very very innovative idea and so fresh compared to the regular dimly lit punjabi restaurants that we see in Delhi.
The food: Oh Lordy! The food. Their tomato basil soup is to die for as are a lot of their pastas and pizzas. but the real winner is their desserts. People - TRUST ME - really - if you’re on a diet or need to refrain from sweet - don’t go. The chocolate squidgy cake (my all time favourite) is just divine! Some of my friends are more partial to the ice creams(the chocolate super fudge has been known to break many a diets) and cheese cakes.
I would be blatantly lying if I said that all was well at the Big Chill. The service is very slow in comparison to the throngs of people outside and inside.Although, there’s not much they can do about that.
They now have two branches. The original at East of Kailash and the second one at Khan Market. I personally prefer the EOK one as its closer to home and bigger. The Khan market outlet has limited dishes as they are fairly small.
They have since opened two more outlets in Khan Market so there is hope! All in all - go there - if for nothing else - then go there for the squidgy cake. TRUST ME. You’ll die fatter but oh so much happier! :-)

Awful
The husband and I decided to celebrate our 1st year anniversary at a fancy-pantsy place. I was given the task of identifying a restaurant and as we are both foodies and have tried A LOT of restaurants
in Delhi, I decided that it had to be something we hadn’t tried before. That was my first mistake. I’m tellin’ you, if you plan on celebrating, do it in familiar territory!
Anyway, I thought, hey! Let’s try the Blue Elephant at the Intercontinental Hotel. I have eaten a scrumptious meal at it’s neighbour “The Grill” and figured that if was half as good as The Grill, I was home free.
What’s amazing about this restaurant is the view. It’s on the topmost floor of the hotel so you have a panoramic view of the city. The cuisine as the name suggests, is Thai. The décor is great…lots of Thai influence, complete with a fish pond and bridge! But that’s where the amazing part ends.
1.We were ushered to a smoking section despite specifying that we want a non-smoking table at the time of reservation.
2.The wine list is impressive but the prices!!! My God – for that kinda money, I may as well go to France and swim in wine country! The menu is extensive and a bit overwhelming. We opted for the preset “Thali”
3. At Rs 1250 + taxes per person, we expected a decent fare. WRONG! We got 6 minuscule bowls between us – all presented by a very inexperienced waiter. The stand on which the “thali” was presented was basically a wrought iron stand with hollows where the miniscule bowls were precariously placed. The bowls contained cold salad, cold chicken, cold fish, cold veggies, cold rice and cold noodles. To make things worse, the food was dripping out of the bowls so the presentation killed whatever little appetite we had after actually seeing the portion size. The deal included dessert and what we got was canned fruit and vanilla ice cream! WHAT A RIP OFF!!!
4.They were playing badly resung remixed versions of 80’s music and I’m telling you, if it wasn’t for the tragic look on the waiter’s face, we would have screamed. The poor guy looked like he was completely at sea and we just didn’t have the heart to get him into trouble.
In the age of fierce competition and an educated and informed client, it was shocking to see such un - professionalism by a hotel chain of this stature.

Poor
I am a self -proclaimed foodie. I can safely say I know most of the good restaurants in Delhi :-)
When we moved to Bangalore - in my quest to find the best restaurant for every cuisine, we
visited I-talia at the Park because I was told it was the best Italian restaurant in town.
Whoever told me that needs to either get their taste buds checked or have their heads examined.
The restaurant is tucked away in a corner of the Park Hotel off M G Road. The decor is very basic and we thought the patio outside the restaurant was much quainter than the restaurant itself. My alarm bells should have gone off when we were the only people in the restaurant other than one more couple - on a saturday afternoon at lunch time!
It started off well because they have a decent selection of wines and other alcohol. I ordered a mint & lime spritz and my boyfriend ordered a Campari and some beer.
The house provides a basket of freshly baked bread and this is very very good. Dip those freshly baked buns into a mixture of balsamic vinegar, olive oil and some chilli flakes – ah! Divine. But that is where the good experience ended.
For my main course I ordered the penne with garlic & cauliflower and my boyfriend ordered beef ( well done) When the food arrived, I was really taken aback - firstly by it’s appearance. It looked like boiled and oiled pasta. The chef had shredded cauliflower and garlic so it was one big lump and he then apparently forgot to cook it! So I got raw garlic & cauliflower pasta and my boyfriend god rare beef! It was so rare that the blood was oozing!!! I sent the pasta and beef back. While the beef came back ok, it looked like the chef had just reheated the pasta and sent it back! We were getting late as this entire procedure had taken more than 1 and a half hours.... so I just ate what I could (not much) and then we ordered dessert. I had the tiramisu and my boyfriend had the cassata. The presentation of both desserts was fantastic. And you really can’t go wrong with a cassata ( basically it’s 3 different flavours of ice cream assembled on a slice of sponge cake) but my tiramisu was nothing special. I think the chef decided - if I put loads of alcohol, they wont realize that the dessert itself has no flavour. All I could taste was the alcohol.... we ate a couple bites and left it.
All in all.... I will never go there again. The service is ok but when you’re paying about 500 rupees/head for food + drinks... I want a little more than decent service. Wot say you?

Good
We found this place by accident. I happened to be visiting the shop next to this restaurant as I had heard one can get good "foreign" magazines (albeit older issues) there. It happened to be lunch time
and since I was hungry (hey! when am I not!?) we decided to venture it...
I liked the place even before I tried the food. It’s not fancy at all and if you don’t know about it, you could miss it.... but the open courtyard and the red and white chequered table cloths give this otherwise non-descript eatery a unique charector.
The food is European or what we call "Continental". From Fish ’n’ Chips to burgers and from pastas to steaks - they have it all. My particular favourite has been the Sloppy Joe and the lasagne.
I don’t remember what I ordered the first time I went there but over the past year I have been there several times and keep going back for more. I am not a big red meat eater but their Sloppy Joes are really nice. I haven’t tried the steaks but from the look on my husband and father’s face - I can assume they are good!
The portions are very generous except for the starters which I feel are a bit small....
The vegetarians don’t have too much of a choice other than pasta and veg sandwiches...
Since it is a open-air concept, one can smoke and it is also condusive for small children as they can run about. They are not supposed to serve alcohol I think but they do and bill beer as an "energy drink" hahahah
I don’t think one needs to make reservations (we never have) but it can get quite crowded at lunch at times so if you’re pressed for time, make the reservation.
The place is run by Shoeb and his cousin and they seem to be doing a good job. I once asked Shoeb how the restaurant got it’s name.... apparently in the olden days this was the only place one could get beef!
The deserts are nothing to write home about but after the scrumptious meal - who has room for dessert?huh?
I recommend this place highly. For good food, decent service and above all - value for money.
