Excellent
Powai has no dearth of restaurants, but none that served fresh, unpretentious continental fare...until now! Lenny Martin (we hear he's been involved with the management of several nightspots in the past) and his partner have set up this gem in the foodcourt area. The menu is small but well thought out. Keeping in mind the limitations of foodcourt service, all the dishes are prepared such that they can be had with just a fork (yes, even the steaks). So don't expect a formal meal with table setting, et al. The chicken steak with spinach cheese sauce was fantastic. We had the grilled chicken salad on our first visit and that was light, crisp, fresh...and superb! They do a chicken ranada with hummus and grilled vegetables which is also very, very good.
Okay, so the food's great. But what we truly enjoy is to see Lenny carry out his vocation with such unbridled enthusiasm. The passion that goes into the cooking is apparent not just when you take a bite, but also when you watch Lenny at work. In the few weeks since we first discovered Gostana, we've been there thrice and will surely go many more times! We took along a vegetarian friend for dinner last night and Lenny offered to whip up something. It was a paneer steak with spinach cheese sauce. Though our friend really did like it, he had had paneer for lunch as well and so couldn't finish his portion. Lenny was a picture of disappointment...almost offended and apologetic at the same time despite our assurance that the dish was indeed good. Needless to add, that dish was not charged for.
If you're in the Powai area, visit Gostana for a highly satisfying meal. For the sake of Lenny's art, I hope his business venture is here to stay!

Excellent
The very positive reviews on burrp made us venture there for dinner last Sat...and we were not disappointed! The kheema baida roti was tasty, albeit very oily. The dabba gosht was simply outstanding and went well with chapatis. The chicken tikka biryani was right up there with the best I've ever had. We first opted for the reshmi tikka biryani (burrpers' recommendation) but the waiter said it would be "too sweet" and suggested the chicken tikka variant. After the fab main course, caramel custard was the apt way to end the meal.
We've been Rajasthan (Khar SV Road) faithfuls for a long time, but I suspect we may stray this way more often now...

Good
First of all, I was surprised that this place wasn't already reviewed on burrp. This chilled out pub with great music has been one of our regular haunts for a few years now. Wanna catch up with friends on a Sat night and down some beers without burning a hole in your most rugged denims? Add to that the reality that most decent joints are crammed to the brim on weekends. Thats where Irish pub steps in like the gallant saviour. Its a great place to hang out, but inexplicably, its rarely ever too crowded to get a table. Not that I'm complaining...! We dropped in last Sat, and believe you me, at one stage there were all of 3 tables occupied...on a Saturday night!!
They have a varied and innovative menu (one of the few pubs which actually has a more-than-decent selection of salads). The staff is pleasant, ever-smiling and efficient. The DJ plays some good retro (and other stuff if the crowd wants him to). They do hukkas in the outdoor seating section. Large projection screens air matches. The prices are very reasonable. The location's good. They have valet parking. Now tell me, what more does one really look for in a watering hole?
I'm probably shooting myself in the foot with this review...maybe won't get a table the next time I'm there! But I think I owe it to the guys...it was so depressing to see them idle (and yet enthusiastic) on a Sat night.

Good
And this typifies the unique concept at this restaurant - finish your kababs the way you like them, at your own pace. The grill placed at each table has been described enough by my fellow burrpers so I won't go there. What I will vouch for is that if you are a die-hard carnivore and can't get enough of meat on a stick, then you can't find a better place than this.
The equation's simple - 500 bucks and an empty stomach is all you need to bring along. No menu choices, specials of the day, or any other frills to distract you. The meat keeps coming...it just keeps coming till you scream "Stop!". The day we went, there was oyster fish, ajwaini prawns, mutton sheekh kabab, chicken tikka and one other chicken kabab. Veggies, don't get me wrong, there's a fairly decent selection for you too. Its just that I wasn't paying too much attention to it (the caramelized onions and mushrooms were very good though). Five non-veg and five veg starters later, there were very few people that I saw at the main course section. We could only manage desserts (quite good - brownies, date cake, gulab jamuns, ice-cream). Undoubtedly, the spotlight is firmly fixed on the grill.
The kababs are 90% cooked before they're brought to your table; all you are expected to do is finish the last 10%. Maybe because of that, the grill simply wasn't hot enough. I felt like I was only "pretending" to grill the food!
This is a very popular place so ensure you have reservations. In fact, its the only restaurant I've encountered in Mumbai which, when I once called on a Saturday afternoon, told me that they were not taking any more reservations as they were full! And I was calling for dinner reservations for later that day!

Excellent
On my wife's superlative feedback, I was tempted enough to brave the chaos of Zaveri Bazaar to come here. Several stops for directions later, we were in Bhagat Tarachand bang in the middle of lunch service. Be prepared to wait for a table - ours lasted about 20 mins. The food here, to put it mildly, is divine! The waiter advised us not to order the thali since the inclusions are fairly standard and instead to order a variety off the menu. We feasted on tomato sev, double tadka dal (superb!), bhindi gobi fry and handkerchief thin chapatis. And oh yes, the crushed papads Chaas is served in beer bottles. Statutory warning: Do not come here if you are on a diet! The food is cooked in desi ghee and there's no "fat-free" variant...thank God.
This place is no-frills, VFM and has great service. The staff were all ever-smiling, polite and very patient with first timers like us. A stuff-your-face-till-you-choke meal for two cost us only 200 bucks. I'm a fairly hardcore non-vegetarian but maybe if there were more restaurants like this, esp in the burbs, I'd consider switching loyalties. Do not skip this place if you are in the Zaveri Bazaar, Crawford Market area or visiting Mumbadevi Temple.
