Cheap and Best!

If you are looking for a quiet, romantic, candle light dinner in a restaurant with soft ambience and music, Amruth is definitely NOT the place.

Amruth is a very popular food joint located on St. Marks Road. to be very specific, it's right below Global Access on the same road. You probably won't see it while passing by because it's on the ground floor of the building. When you enter this place, the first thing you notice is the sign, "Beware of mobile thieves." Ok then. So basically, Being the paranoid person that I am, I took that to think that someone will inject me with some kind of drug, take me to a place far far away, steal my phone and then kill me. Basically, just remain cautious. It gets very crowded sometimes, and some people take that to their advantage.

Ok, moving on, so I went to the counter and looked at the short and sweet menu. They have the basic South Indian food - Idli, Dosa, Vada etc. They also have the basic North Indian Food - Chapati, Puri, etc. They also have sandwiches - Rs 20-30, chaat - Rs 15 - 25 , juice - Rs. 20-30, thalis - Rs 30 and ice cream - Rs 15 - 30.. And not to forget, coffee, tea, bournvita, and the like.

This place is like dirt cheap compared to most places nowadays and they actually provide a quantity meal. Things I would recommend are:

1. Rava Idli - priced at Rs. 12 - awesome, awesome, awesome.

2. Rava Dosa - priced at Rs. 20 - Yummy!

3. North Indian or South Indian Thali - priced at Rs. 30 - very filling, you get rice, a choice of puri or roti, curd rice, subzi, pickle and the works. =)

4. Idli - Priced at Rs.6 - there are people I know that actually come to Amruth, buy idlis and take them for people in Mumbai. Enough said.

5. Last but not the least, Curd Rice - Priced at Rs. 12 - Take a trip to heaven.

Now, going to the other details. The place has marble counters, where you can place your food and eat, either standing or there are stool-type things where you can sit. There is technically no seating unless you're having a North Indian Thali in which case they let you sit inside, but mind you it's again just basic seating. Nothing extravagant.

Music, zilch, zero, none. But that's the charm of this place I guess. This place is self-service, so no worry about waiters acting bonkers. The service is pretty quick - shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes to get your meal. The main thing about this place is, it's hygienic. Thank goodness for that.
They also provide free water - zero B water to be exact. It is disturbing sometimes to see not too young, but tnot oo old kids cleaning up the place.

What else, to say about Amruth, there was once when I went and ordered for my favorite, Curd Rice, for take away and the man at the counter said something. Being the smartass that I am, I was like "Kannada gothe illa" which means I don't know Kannada in Kannada. And he replied - "I was speaking in English". Quite embarassing.

This place is extemely popular with work people, so avoid going in the afternoon unless you want to get caught in a stampede of cranky office people who are on a time schedule. They do accept Sodexho vouchers.

Some things to note - NO non-veg food, NO credit card accepted, NO home delivery. They do have take away though.

Amruth - cheap and best. Value for money.

A coffee shop unlike others

Java City, it is a well-known name amongst the many coffee shops that exist in Bangalore. Though you would think that Coffee Day has dominated the coffee shop world, Java City is still drawing its share of customers with its simplicity and coziness.

The coffee shop is located on Lavelle Road, next to another popular coffee plus sheesha joint, Mocha. Admittedly, it looks very plain compared to Mocha but Java City scores points for better prices.

The menu is filled with coffees, teas, snacks, sandwiches and other variety of foods. One dish I would recommend here is Chicken Lasagne. It is priced at Rs 70 and the quantity is quite decent for its price. I wouldn't say it's exquisite but it's basic and good. I'm talking strictly on the basis of coffee shop food and not Italian cuisine. :)

Another dish which is a good bite there is Margerita Pizza. And if you order one full margerita pizza which is priced at Rs 125, you get one free! This is not mentioned anywhere on the menu or around the coffee shop, but it's an unsaid offer.

A drink I would recommend here is the Chocolate Milkshake, it is priced at Rs. 60 and it's a good way to beat the heat. The ice teas are also worth mentioning. For coffee fans, the latté is an excellent option.
Though it's not the most reasonable place ever, it doesn't go over the top which is great.
So you can say that a meal for two would come to about 300 including drinks.

The ambience, well there's not much of an ambience really, but it's open air and cosy. The music is usually barely audible and mostly radio.
The service, ahem, the service is actually quite bad. You really need to be lucky to catch a waiter in the first 15 minutes and the order takes about atleast 30 minutes. But they are very courteous and suggestive.

It attracts a lot of professionals as well as the young crowd.
Java City, also has a shop called Say C which sells women's clothing, shoes and bags. They have an excellent choice of the above and marked as a definite shopping stop for women.

Java City - cosy, comfortable and reasonable. Nothing great, but not bad at all.

Mouth-watering Indian Food

When I first went to Café Masala, I thought that it was another Indian/Continental/Chinese/Italian joint where it's suffocatingly multi-cuisine. But one glance at the menu cleared all my doubts. Filled with delicious Indian dishes and drinks to satisy my parched throat, I would say the first impression was good!

I live for chicken, so I ordered a chicken starter called Murgh Kalimirch. Oh my god, the first bite led me into another world where I was in a heaven of flavour. Even thinking about it right now is making my mouth water. Moving on, after the delicous starter, I ordered for some naan and two chicken dishes, Murgh Makhani and Murgh Kalra. Needless to say, it wasn't dissappointing at all! I was almost weeping at how good the dish was. Ah, I can still feel the taste in my mouth!

Overall, the experience was a great one for me. And what added to it was the great service, great music and the ambience.
The service was prompt and the waiters very helpful and suggestive. My waiter, Mr. Saji, was very helpful when it came to suggestions on quantity and choice of dish.
There was a live performer who was playing the keyboard and singing, who was pleasant and sang lovely melodious slow songs that sent you into nostalgia.
The ambience was cosy and well-lit unlike some restaurants where you can barely see your food and other restaurants where you get blinded. Perfect lighting, a good view from the balcony and also a very classy atmosphere.

Overall, I think that Café Masala offers a delicious variety of food for quite a reasonable price.
The starters range from about Rs. 125-185, the main dishes from about Rs. 185-230 and dessert ranging from 100-200.

All of us know the BJN group is minting money, well all I can say is Café Masala is definitely contributing to it.
