Home of good food

Queens was once referred to, very fondly, as the only restaurant in Bangalore that serves "phulkas" (for the uninitiated a phulka is a fluffier, lighter version of the traditional North Indian roti and almost a staple in all households). There's a lot of competition on that front now but Queens still manages to stand out amongst the newbies and retain the simple basics that made it the gold standard once.

The restaurant is located in a shady part of Church Street, and if you're not looking for the trademark green canopy on it's outside (amidst the jumble of small shops and parked motorcycles around) you might just miss it. The decor inside isn't much better (old style mud walls and dull lighting) and can even be a tad unappetizing for someone who doesn't know the place well but the food is well worth those dampeners. It isn't exactly home like food but it's very well prepared authentic North Indian with the spices and the flavours got perfectly right. The choices are limited (as compared to most other North Indian eateries in Bangalore) and the menu hasn't changed in years (or hadn't till I was there last) but almost everything on it is worth a try.

One small note: Do make a reservation in advance or you might end up waiting for a good half an hour or more before you're let inside.

A sunny place for western food

The first thing that strikes you about Sunny's is its very chic decor. The place has been done up in minimalistic black and white and looks just perfect for the cuisine it serves. Add to this the huge number of expats you'll always spot here and and you almost feel transported.

The food varies from good to very good (some of the pastas are quite nice as is the veg Lasagna). The service is exceptionally good but the atmosphere tends to be a tad snooty and walking in unprepared, wearing your throw-on Sunday apparel may not be a great idea.

The dessert menu is scrumptiously long and has some fabulous variety on it. The takeaway breads are OK (Fiorano makes them better) but the fresh mozzarella cheese is quite nice (and expensive!).

On the whole, a decent place to have a meal at but the costs are a wee bit prohibitive and you're better off saving it for a special occasion.

An ode to no great fare

A very grand venue,
neato decor does justice
to not too bad a menu

Order, if you must
to show off your way
with the world

For the rest,
do ye self a favour,
pass this one over

The food is no great affair
a pompous treat
is all that's there.

Give your senses some rest
Bangalore has better
places to eat, if you care

Disappointing

Really, whose version of Delhi or Chandni Chowk is this? Bollywood perhaps!

The food is alright, nothing great, some of it almost bad - too oily and greased with no conviction shown by the cooks. One wishes that these people would one day make it to the real Chandni Chowk area in Delhi and wash their distorted fancy with the great street food that the old Delhi locality is so famous for

The decor is tacky in the name of creativity. Ya, its brilliant to print the menus on an embroidery set and present bills in a jewellery box but it does not cut it when you have had your guests sitting on stone slabs which have done no justice to their back(side)s.

On the whole, very avoidable.
