Death of an Institution!!

God knows how many meals I've partaken of in this restaurant, which, like MTR, Chalukya, India Coffee House, Corner House, etc define the culinary heritage of the city...but I'm pretty sure now that the meal had over the past weekend is the last I'm gonna be having here!!

It's very disappointing to see Casa's..more of an institution for so many Bangaloreans than a restaurant, falling by the wayside in terms of quality...anyways, on to the meal..

We'd gone there on Saturday afternoon for a late lunch and started off with an order of French Fries and Russian Salad (veg). Most of the fries were soggy and barely warm and the salad was passable...anyways, I thought, the food's bound to be good...after all, it's Casa's!!!

We ordered a Ratatouille Eggplant Lasagna and a Godfather pizza (with the heavenly meat sauce)...they got the pizza first...which had some peculiar angles to it..seemed like a leftover pizza base being used...it was warm (decidedly not fresh off the oven) and the meat sauce tasted rather weird..like some meats just bunched together for a round in the blender before being heated and laid out on the base...I was very very disappointed considering I'd been looking forward to this for the entire week!! The lasagna arrived about 15 mins afterwards...(this was around 3 pm, when the restaurant was half full) and was more like a 'baingan ki subzi, Indian style' which'd been layered b/n sheets of lasagna and had a generous dollop of melted, grated cheese atop....we left more than half the dish uneaten!!

The saving grace though was the dessert - Marble cake with Ice cream, which was the only order that brought a smile to our faces and made me sure I was indeed @ Casa's!!...

This was actually the second time in the past month that I've had such a poor experience...had discounted the first one to an off day..but hey...you can't have an off day every other week..!!!

I would strongly recommend against going to atleast this branch of Casa's (unfortunately, this was their first..) as the owners seem to be focussing more on their upscale Casa-del-Sol and leaving this to their assuredly incompetent staff to manage...!!

Great Experience

Went here on a family dinner and had a great meal in a very pleasant ambience.

The first thing I liked about this place was the menu - very systematically designed - one could go to exactly the page they're looking for without having to browse through 5 other pages and hunt around!

To start off, we ordered the Veg Sweet Corn and Nanking Special (chicken) soups, both of which were very good as was the accompanying Fried Corn Curd - nice and soft centers with a subtle flavour. The best order of the evening though was their signature Stir / Pan Fried Pomfret - absolutely heavenly - boneless, just the right combination and amount of seasoning and a generous quantity...don't mind going again just for this starter (costliest dish of the evening as well, Rs 800 + tax)!!

Dinner was good - ordered a Claypot Veg Rice which had shitake mushrooms and some dehydrated veggies (didnt like the latter), Veg Hakka Noodles, Chicken & Veg in Schezwan sauces and a Fuyong (best I've had in B'lore) - all good with the right flavours, not overpowering and in generous quanities, but nothing to touch the pomfret starter!!

Followed up dinner with a Honey Noodles with Ice Cream - thought we'd order one to see how it was here and the quantity was enough for the 4 of us to leave the restaurant with a pleasant flavour in the mouth. Unlike in other places where the noodles are just dipped in honey, here, the noodles were thoroughly saturated in it and not made overly crisp - just perfect!

The evening cost us Rs 3,000 (4 people) and we'd ordered a couple of soft drinks as well, no alcohol. Net net, I'd recommend this place for anyone who wants to have a genuine Chinese meal (no tomato ketchup..!!!) in a pleasant ambience with presentable and knowledgeable staff (god knows they're a rarity in B'lore restaurants).

Callous attitude

We'd made a reservation for 6 and upon arrival, were seated slam bang opposite the restroom...close enough to be 'treated' to a view of the interiors everytime the door was opened. When I protested asking for an alternate seat, I was given the 'take it or leave it' treatment! I of course left it...didn't think it'd be too nice to have decidedly unpleasant smells wafting in over the aroma of their risottos (which I love). Promptly went to Via Milano and had a great meal in a very chic and friendly ambience!

Bottomline - while making a reservation, tell them that you really don't want a seat with a 'view'!!!!!!!!!

Very low on hygiene

We'd gone there recently and amongst our order were a Rava Idli and a Masala Dosa. Halfway through these orders, we found cockroaches in the Idli and in the Masala within the Dosa. When we showed this to the waiter, the nonchalant response was, "Sir, we clean our kitchens on Saturday night, so maybe these had fallen into the batter / food"..!!!! Ridiculous...never before have I heard such pathetic excuses without any effort being made to replace the food...needless to say that we left our half eaten food, paid the bill and vowed never to return (except of course for ice creams at the Corner House outlet within the hotel's premises).

Awesome Indian (Yeah, that's right!!) Food!

For those who're new to B'lore, this may seem like an anomaly...going to a place which has 'Chinese' in its name for Indian cuisine...but this place serves the most awesome black dal in town for sure!! Suggested dinner order (Veggie):

Starters - Chilli Potatoes & Onion Cakes
Main Course - Black Dal & Butter Paneer
Roomali Rotis
Peas Pulao (accentuates the taste of the dal, especially when served steaming hot)

An average meal for 2 including drinks (desserts aren't that great, hop across to the nearest Corner House instead) would cost about Rs 1,000 - great value for money!!
