Atria Mall, Food Court, Worli, Mumbai

Average

Underwhelming

Finally got to DG last night after canceling thrice. The place is fairly small and they have rules (good thing) regarding clothing, kids and reservations all of which sounds great but seems weird considering they are based out of a mall.

Anyway, the decor is typical dim lighting, minimum spacing and there is no real bar. The menu is fairly expansive so there is plenty to try for vegetarians and non-vegetarians. I would recommend getting a proper menu made rather than printouts which seems cheap.

The chef is of course Italian which is very evident in the first page itself where he reminds you that the first basket of bread is free but then on its 50 bucks for bread and 50 bucks for Olive oil. Last time i checked we didnt levy bread charges. whats next ? cover charges for restaurants. This isn't Venice. Also the bread isnt worth 50 bucks. sorry!

We started of with the Pasta Fagioli which is pasta and beans. This was an average soup, nothing great, they didnt offer a Minestrone on the menu either.

The Bruschetta was tomato and olive oil, slightly on the saltier side but not bad. Although no one at the table was impressed with it. I have had some tremendous Bruschetta across the street at the Ivy.

The main course was Lasagna which was excellent, just the right bake and sauce. Worked well. The Risotto and this is what i reckon we should judge restaurants by was bloody weak.

There are tremendous risottos available in this city (Basilico, Moshe, Celini) What i got tasted a lot like a Khichadi and even looked like one, if they didnt have mushrooms i would have had to ask for some yogurt and papad.

The tiramisu was too creamy but had plenty of liqueur.

The place is dull and constricted, the food is unimaginative and joyless.

There is plenty to try so maybe another visit before i really make up my mind.

The service was fairly slow too, good thing i asked them for the entrees before the appetizers came in.

The pricing for 3 without drinks was 1900. I could drop maybe another 600 bucks and have a great Italian meal at Celini)

Shop No. 18, Meera CHS, Oshiwara Link Road, Oshiwara, Andheri (W), Mumbai

Good

good, plenty of potential as well

Sammy Sosa isn't an easy to place to get to if you live in South Bombay. Had a meeting that end and was able to make it for a late lunch.

The place is small but fairly bright, they seem to have the Mexican kitsch down pat. Seating is tight but comfortable and the whole place has a young vibe.

They dont have a liquor license but they could teach a thing or two about how a Margarita is made to just about any bartender in the city (FROZEN is where its at) just wish they were bigger.

The food is good, part authentic part Indian and part fusion. We got the nachos and the potato skins. Both were okay, not exactly tex-mex all the way but strong dishes nonetheless. Nachos should have been soft tortilla rather than chips based.

The main course was the enchilada which was excellent, i wish they could do up some mexican rice and refried beans on the side which would complete the platter. The other dish was the verdura verde, not bad but too much going on.

The dessert was not very mexican, honey and pistachio crepes. Top notch.

They said part of their problems is sourcing the avocados for the guacamole which in some cases they have to avoid serving if its not up to the mark. Similar issues with sourcing the right kind of beans and peppers. They do use Monterrey Jack cheese.

Overall the service was quick, the food was good and they are a young lot making a serious effort. hopefully things will get even stronger.

Plenty more things to try, hopefully i can swing another meeting in Andheri!

Average

ho hum!

Finally got to Golden Star and it was a huge let down. The ambiance is nothing to write home about and the food is pretty average.

We had the staple potato in tomato gravy, dal, kadi, and the three boring veggies.

The saving grace was the fantastic dal baati, tomato uttapam and khichadi. they bumped the meal to average from fairly poor.

the service was scatter brained and slow.

at 210 bucks a pop, i can get a comparable thali at Samrat or Status in better ambiance for less.

quantity over quality i reckon...

Average

potential

Tamnak Thai is stuck in the late 80's when it comes to decor and seem to have used the same book as the Oh! Calcutta folks.

The ambiance is not much to speak off however the food is not too bad. Need to try out the menu a few times here and there but the place has some potential for sure.

Pricing is also reasonable.

ITC Grand Central Sheraton & Towers, Dr. Ambedkar Road, Parel, Mumbai

Excellent

great breakfast buffet

was there yesterday for an early morning breakfast around 9am and it was packed to capacity.

everything on the menu is part of the buffet so really very little sense in going for a la carte.

the spread is pretty impressive and they cover a lot of ground with cuisine as well as beverages.

you get pancakes, beans, parathas, khichadi, veggies, mushrooms, eggs, selection of bread and cheese, plenty of juice, milkshakes, lassis, coffee etc etc.

it really has something for everyone and most of what i tried was good. i do believe that ordering of the menu means even better quality.

i have tried the spread at Shamiana and erstwhile Palms but neither come close to this.

the service is ok, could be better. they are also offering plenty of Indian bubbly on the house for all their buffets.

meal for two 1300.
