Good
It's an unassuming eating joint located in the 2nd floor of the Gariahat Market. Also known as Kali Maity's hotel.
They serve some classic Bengali food at budget rate. Illish or Hilsha, the seasonal fish Bengalis would die for, is one of the best you get here.
The Silvery Shine of an Illish petty (a slice of the abdomen) gets a Golden glitter when prepared in the mustard paste is ready to take you to the seventh heaven.
The other item is the Chitol Petty, Chetol is a feather fish (Notopterus Chitala), big in size and the piece from the abdomen is considered a delicacy. A single piece might weight about 1/2 a Kg.
Kali Maity serves Chitol petty with equal grace like his Illish has. Worth to remember for many years.
You also get some authentic Bengali chore like "Chenchra" or "Murighonto" other than the usual Daal, jhoori aaloo bhaja.
And all that you get in an unbelievably low price.
Clearly the consistent offering of good food at high volume is the trick for Maity.
The one star less rating is for their simpletone look

If you pass by this place in the morning, you will not have any clue about what is going to happen here in the afternoon. It's a small 3X10 ft Verandah of a North Calcutta street side house in the busy Surya Sen Street.
By 3.30 in the afternoon, an old tempo van will stop here, few people will pull out big Kadai and some other utensils, set up two wooden benches, and will start their work.
In 10 minutes, the big Kadai has now boiling hot oil, and all kinds of "Telebhaja"s are getting dip fried in it.
"Telebhaja" means fired in oil. What is fried? All sorts of pakodas and chops...the list is like this:
Amer Chop ( Mango flavored Chop)
Tomator chop (Chop with Tomato)
Aaloor chop (Potato chop)
Mochar chop (Chop with Banana Flowers)
Peyanji (Onion Bhujia)
Beguni (Brinjal Bhujia)
Kumri (Sweet Gourd Bhujia)
The non-veg affair is like :
Macher chop (Fish chop)
Mutton chop
Chicken chop
Dimer chop (Chop with Eggs)
Chingri chop (Chop with shrimps)
The price range is from Rs.1 to Rs.5.00
People are waiting in queue, to get the hot and super tasty bites, in the evening, by 5.30 or 6, you will see, the High Court Lawyer, the professor from Presidency College are among the crowd to have some garam garam telebhaja.
By 7.30, everything is over. The guys are packing their things back into that Tempo again and in another half an hour, are normal again.

My favourite for radha ballavi and kachauri and aaloor tarkari.
This place will remain immortal in the memory of several thousands of South Pointers along with their school days...

I was a regular to this place 5 years back. Having our office in Infantry Road and working late night to connect with the US office, it was an obvious choice.
The meal served in office canteen at 9.00 pm used to be awful!! So we used to frequent to Empire, just walking distance from the office, arround 1.00 or 1.30. Still that place is packed.
You will get a typical mix of crowd at this hour.
You get IT professionals like us, you get pub hoppers having some filling in the stomach. Even you get whores from the Brigade Road dance bars came down with their hooked ones having food on the first floor cabins.
The service is super fast!! Have a list of name in the menu that sounds like Indian Chinese, but served with Curry Patta! Only in one item tehy spared with the Curry Patta, that is ice-cream!!
Though the red gravey is with full of color, they are one of the best place in Bangalore for budget non-veg meal.
Another thing to mention. They have Vertical Rotisserie!!
You will see that is placed next to the entrance, roasting a whole leg of lamb. This vertical rotisserie is typical to Central Asian cuisine, like the greek "Gyros" or middle eastern "Shawarma".
The buzzing crowd infront of the restaurant, the smell of roasted meat, the occational raving of a super charged Toyota Supra on the main road, all togather Empire at midnight is a different world, a different experience.

Once upon a time....there was ONLY ONE watering hole in the entire Saltlake, and that is Mishras.
The food and drink was OK with a reasonable price tag.
When it's The Only One, you don't complain.....right?
Don't know if they have improved services of late with competitions coming up at every corner in Saltlake
