A bengali's idea of heaven is good food...

...and Oh! Calcutta fits the bill very well indeed. I am a regular visitor to this little establishment tucked away in the grimy lanes of Tardeo. The friendly waiters and staff know their food and can often be seen guiding the "non-bengali's" on the best/the more traditional combination of food.
I went there last week with a vegetarian friend and was convinced that it would be a disappointment since they do have a limited vegetarian fare. However, I wasn't disappointed because the bhaja moonger dal with chochori and fragrant basmati rice with a side of aloo bhaja was spot on. The aloo bhaja was perhaps too crisp and to thinly sliced by my standards (although "kati aloo bhajas" sliced thinly is my favourite type of aloo bhaja). We settled for rosogollar payesh for dessert which was outstanding as always.
My favourite dishes at Oh! Calcutta are the shorshe maach dishes (steamed fish cooked in a gorgeous mustard sauce) and their chingri malai curry (prawns cooked in coconut milk)- if you have a penchant for fish, these dishes are a must try!
The dim lighting and stark decor could do with a make over. I love the pencil sketches of landmarks around Kolkata. It remains my favourite place to indulge in some simple, "home made" bengali fare!

awesome food

excellent food, always good and always the great taste that you remember. even for a non-bengali & a vegetarian at that, the food is appetising, memorable and keeps you wanting more. servings are just right and reasonably priced. the cholar dal is a must try as is the aloo dum and the luchi. other preparations with cauliflower are equally good. while its a quiet place and you can't expect to have a 'hip' place to hang out, its a must visit for the food. service is good, staff are affable and helpful.
