The Casa is crumbling

I began going to this restaurant as a little tyke in shorts. Then, 2 decades ago, this place was quaint and clean, with good service and good food.

Over the years they've messed with their menu, changed waiters, changed the ambiance and changed the quality.
Like the Sensex lately, pretty much all are shot to hell.

The prices have gone up disproportionately when compared to the reduction in quantity and dismal quality. Cold soggy fries, stale salads and soups with microscopic proportions of veggies or meat are all that's left of this memory.

The service used to be good, but now is in the league of "dump-the-plate-down-with-a-slam-and-stalk-away". I guess the owner is more focused on his other restaurant (read *that* review!), and other businesses to give more than an rats-ass about this place.

Death of an Institution!!

God knows how many meals I've partaken of in this restaurant, which, like MTR, Chalukya, India Coffee House, Corner House, etc define the culinary heritage of the city...but I'm pretty sure now that the meal had over the past weekend is the last I'm gonna be having here!!

It's very disappointing to see Casa's..more of an institution for so many Bangaloreans than a restaurant, falling by the wayside in terms of quality...anyways, on to the meal..

We'd gone there on Saturday afternoon for a late lunch and started off with an order of French Fries and Russian Salad (veg). Most of the fries were soggy and barely warm and the salad was passable...anyways, I thought, the food's bound to be good...after all, it's Casa's!!!

We ordered a Ratatouille Eggplant Lasagna and a Godfather pizza (with the heavenly meat sauce)...they got the pizza first...which had some peculiar angles to it..seemed like a leftover pizza base being used...it was warm (decidedly not fresh off the oven) and the meat sauce tasted rather weird..like some meats just bunched together for a round in the blender before being heated and laid out on the base...I was very very disappointed considering I'd been looking forward to this for the entire week!! The lasagna arrived about 15 mins afterwards...(this was around 3 pm, when the restaurant was half full) and was more like a 'baingan ki subzi, Indian style' which'd been layered b/n sheets of lasagna and had a generous dollop of melted, grated cheese atop....we left more than half the dish uneaten!!

The saving grace though was the dessert - Marble cake with Ice cream, which was the only order that brought a smile to our faces and made me sure I was indeed @ Casa's!!...

This was actually the second time in the past month that I've had such a poor experience...had discounted the first one to an off day..but hey...you can't have an off day every other week..!!!

I would strongly recommend against going to atleast this branch of Casa's (unfortunately, this was their first..) as the owners seem to be focussing more on their upscale Casa-del-Sol and leaving this to their assuredly incompetent staff to manage...!!

King of the Casas

I can't believe this place hasn't been reviewed yet! Anyway, I shall take it upon myself to settle that straight away. This is my favourite Casa outlet in the whole city! Cunningham Road comes close, but the others don't come close to the Residency Road Casa, in my opinion. I've tried the same dishes at every Casa in Bangalore, but I love the food here the most. My standard order is a Minestrone Soup, Penne with Pesto (red sauce), and french fries. I've been ordering the same thing for years, and it never gets old. There's nothing fancy about it at all. It just works. And the portions are pretty big. There's no view to speak of, and it's sort of semi-indoors, so it's a pretty no-nonsense place. Thankfully, the food more than redeems it. The waiters are attentive and efficient, and there used to be a lovely gentleman with a cowboy hat and guitar who used to come and sing a few yodelly cowboy songs, which was the cutest thing ever! Haven't seen him around recently though, but it'll be great if you're lucky enough to catch him.
