Oh Yeah!

The Tavern is located on the first floor of Museum Inn. You have to take the stairs located next to the elevator. Tall humans, mind your head as the ceiling in the passage and within the pub is low.

As soon as you enter, the first thing you see is the bar counter. The lighting is golden dim. There are a few LCD televisions mounted on the wall, usually showing sports. Cozy sofas good enough for 6 people are attached to wall, kinda giving you a private space. There is also an upper deck away from the brouhaha. We were seated at the tables midway from the bar counter and the sofas. These tables are unique in that the high chairs and table are rigged to the floor and give you a unique experience.

The crowd is decent and mature, minding their own business and of course, a glance here and there! I read somewhere that they serve spitfire beer, but the waiter had no idea what it was. So we settled for KF pitcher. And to nibble, we ordered a peanut masala, French Fries (the best I have ever had in my life), and a lamb starter. By 9 PM, the atmosphere became lively and the pub was filled to its brim. So much so that the waiter could give us two spoons for the peanut masala when were four of us. He said they have only 50 spoons and there are more than 100 people in the pub now.

Anyways, we were enjoying the football match with rock music from the nineties in the background.

I will be definitely going back here to enjoy the beer with french fries. Prices are on the upper bracket, (Pitcher of beer is Rs.450, a lamb starter is Rs.300).

Definitely worth a visit for anyone who drinks!

Best watering hole in the city

OK, maybe tied with Geoffrey's in first place! :) Although I've been to Tavern quite a few times before, I certainly don't (and will not be allowed to) consider myself as a regular here. Every time I've visited the place, it's been with the same group of friends, and more often than not it's been to watch a game of football: be it the world cup or Manchester United in the EPL, and every time I've just enjoyed the microcosm inside there.

A lot of people take issue with the fact that the place gets too noisy and fills up with a lot of smoke. Hello! Did anyone forget to mention to them that this is a pub??? However, now with the ban on smoking, the puffers have to take a step outside to exhale the gaseous crap from their lungs. Now let's get to the most important thing: the booze. The Spitfire draught beer is very good, and this coming from someone who otherwise doesn't like beer too much. The atmosphere is just the way a pub is supposed to be-people trying to get into 'serious' conversation with booze (don't have to tell you how serious that will be!), others frantically asking, nay yelling, at others to move away and stop blocking their view of the TV, and you can also occasionally catch a young couple warming up (an improvement since otherwise this would have been happening at a coffee shop).

The rest of the booze - from the Mohitos to the Tequilas, the Long Island Ice teas to a Vodka neat are swell, and without a doubt, it's places like this that makes Bangalore proud to be the pub city of India. The snacks available are good - but hold on, they're just snacks, don't you be coming to a pub and hoping to have a proper meal, coz if that's the case, you're already high (even before the booze has hit you).

The service is pretty quick and efficient, even on the most crowded Saturday evenings, so this place rates very high. And what's more, if you become a regular here, and get to know the waiters by their names, you could get served a lil better than the rest of the junta.

i'm lovin' it

"Sometimes you want to go, Where everybody knows your name, And they're always glad you came..."

Tavern is my Cheers.

Love the draught beer, the smoke filled air, the waiters. Love that they fall all over themselves to seat me whenever I walk in. Love the DJ, love the uncomfortable high chairs, love accidentally banging my head on the low ceiling. And loved it even when they stopped serving Old Monk. Have spent way too many nights, had so many moments, blown much money in this place. And I'm still lovin' it.

Next time you're in Tavern, make eye contact with a waiter, raise your class and shout "YOCTO". You might get the drink free -:)

I'm already telling stories about this place

One of my guiltiest pleasures as a student in Bangalore has been this wonderful place. I know that 'wine shops' are a student's best friend, and Pecos is treated as a luxury by our ilk, but after my first visit to the Tavern, there was no way I could deny myself such a rewarding indulgence.

Everyone has places they tell stories about; in many cases, the establishment becomes part of your life, even part of you. In Bangalore, as unlikely as it may seem, the 'Tavern', as we call it, is my Story Bar. I've experienced every shade of human emotion here. The unlikely start to a lifelong friendship. A raucous boys' night out. A nervous first date with the girl of my dreams. A tense night watching a critical football match. A solitary session with a glass to drown my sorrow in. A quiet drink with my inner circle to celebrate a team victory. Trying to impress family and friends from far-flung places, making them fall in love with Bangalore. Worrying about college, life, and my future as a young lawyer. It's all happened here, in this beautiful tavern.

I'm an old hand, to say the least. Yet still, to this day, I feel a tug in my gut, a skip of the heart, every time I climb the narrow stairs and round the corner that leads me to the door. That's saying something, isn't it? Maybe my connection with the Tavern is purely emotional. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I made it my best friend and home-away-from-home, knowing I'd spend the next five years of my life in an alien city, building a future from scratch.

Still, I know you'll love it too. The service is eccentric, yet always friendly and unpretentious. The waiters will shake your hand, and the barman will chat with you if you're alone. It's almost as if everyone's a regular.

This is not 'cheap', certainly not by a student's definition of the term. But my way of looking at it is that you're paying not just for a drink, but for an experience. The music is always spot-on. You'll never hear anything that makes you cringe. The snacks are well-thought-out; try the American-style corn kernels. The drinks are great, too. The beer comes in a solid pint mug, mixers are served in businesslike glassware, and the cocktails are tasty and unpretentious.

Yes, it can get more than a little smoky. It can also get *very* crowded. Make a reservation if you're arriving anytime after 8.30. It's dead in the late afternoon/evening, but undergoes a kafkaesque metamorphosis in the space of half an hour or so. Still, the crowd adds to the charm of the place. The decor is tasteful and subtle to a fault, themed as it is around an old English alehouse. Nothing gets in your way, and even when the table next to you is full and your elbows feel constricted, you'll never feel like your personal space is being encroached upon.

If you've already been here, you're probably a regular. And if you haven't been here yet, your first visit will probably turn you into one.

Great bar, too much smoke

I strongly feel bars should make rules about smoking in Bangalore. It will be good for business (contrary to what people would have you believe). My work buddies and I love this place otherwise --- has great taste in rock music, and has a pleasant laid back ambience. The appetizers are to die for - the masala peanuts, American Chilly Corn, Chilly Lamb and Chicken Three flavours are our favorites.
