Best South Indian Authentic vegetarian

* Absolutely love this place!

* Ambience, Service, price, everything feels just so right...

* 50 bucks for a simple meal, 100 bucks for the 'special meals' complete with Juice, Soup, icecream, sweet etc.

* My friend tells me that this is MTR without the crowds...I have never been to MTR, but I'll take him for his word.

* Pongal ain't that good, but try out the Rava dosas, rava idlis and ofcourse, don't forget the silver cup coffee...

* All in All, good 'bang for the buck'. Go enjoy!

Utter waste of money!

Landed up here on a saturday afternoon after reading the reviews.

Being a new restaurant, the tables and chairs were new but the ambience was not like that of a normal restaurant. As soon as I sat in the chair I struggled for quite a while for a comfortable seating position. The table is deisgned in a such way that one cannot keep their legs inside. I gave up and was just waited for the food to be served so that I can get out from that place as soon as I can.

I asked for a menu and I was told only meals would be served. I had no option but looking around, I anticipated it to be a good meal from the number of items being served. No
descriptions of the items as u might have already seen from the previous reviews;but the way the food was served caught my attention to be an immitation of MTR. Though they tried to add some variety into it but the food was really disgusting. Not one item was good. It was as if I'm eating in my office food court! The ice cream was self made and its state was some where between milk and icecream. I literally had a vomiting sensation.

They charged Rs.100 for this food and I felt like a total waste of money.

As I was coming out, I gazed at all the sweets and decided on Badam Halwa. Let me tell you that is the best that you can get in the city after MTR. I even tried in other sweet shops like Adyar Anand Bhavan, Arya Bhavan etc... but this place is the best for Badam Halwa.

Average hurried south indian meals

Visited this restaurant 2-3 times after reading many reviews
and listening to the hype from others. I had also visited
MTR 15 years back and was expecting the same kind
of high quality service

Breakfast
--------------
Breakfast was reasonably good, especially the greasy masala dosa. rava idli taste was mediocre...

Something odd was that they gave 1 big bowl of chutney
and ghee per table when we ordered masala dosas. Shouldn't they give 1 bowl of chutney per person????

Coffee was tasteless and sugarless ( sugar is
served separately ).... They use their own coffee blend
but I think Cothas coffee tastes better....
Can't they just add atleast minimum amount of
sugar in each cup like in other resturants??
If I add right amount of crystal(not powder)
sugar and stir, it takes time which means longer queues outside....

People are standing on the stairs outside looking
through the glass walls
( there is no waiting area and no chairs )

Lunch
---------
Went for lunch with a group of 5 on a Friday.
The special meal (Rs 100) is much-hyped and not worth it.
The juice was diluted, and it could have been better.
( was it made from powder? ..tasted like Rasna )
The hot soup and hot puris/curry was average just like
in any other good restaurant.

And please give us either juice or soup..no point drinking
1 after the other within 2 minutes.....they don't mix well

Then came the capsicum rice, sambar, rasam, rice, curds
.... good to taste, but I have tasted much better versions at other restaurants

No masala dosas were served at lunch. ( atleast they
could have given 1 mini masala dosa .....
Udupi's gives 2
tasty ones for starters(unlimited) )

The ice cream/fruit salad was very watery...why not just
give just a scoop of icecream like at Udupi's???

Service was very hurried. No finger-bowl to wash hands.
Average south indian meals just like at other places
but expensive

If you ask them to pack your meals to-go, then make sure
you take 16 containers. Otherwise, they will supply
their own plastic containers and charge you for each one
without informing you before of the charge.
Hint: be careful..don't pack your food. when you go
home, it's tasteless, especially the capsicum rice
even if you reheat.

And finally 1 reason why I will never visit there for lunch/dinner again:- I was finishing up the very small
mini-bowl of vermicelli porridge when the waiter
started collecting our plates for cleaning up the table.
Should I place the spoon and bowl on table itself since
they took away the plate????
Can't they wait till I finish up and go for hand-wash?

Our group of 5 finished lunch in 15 mins max..so if they don't
have patience to wait and start cleaning the table
up before I get up, then I will spend my hard earned money at so many other restaurants, crowded or not, which still offer
patient service and better tasting food.

An MTR close to home

Went there with family and was ushered in by the person who owns and manages the restaurant, Sudharshan Maiyya. He's a very courteous person who was forthcoming with answers to all the questions my curious aunt had. :-)

The food was really tasty and deserves all the praise that it gets. In all, the food is the biggest reason why folks love the place and they just can't seem to get enough of it.

There's an option to pack your meals as well - but they ask that you get 16 containers because they have that many items. You can also take away breakfast and snacks from there.

Anyone with a sweet tooth will enjoy the sweet counter on the ground floor.

I'd give a rating of 4 1/2 (if Burrp allowed it), but not 5 - the place is a little too cramped when it's full. :-)

Enjoy!

Simply Super and Southern...

Heard quite a lot about this place and being a resident of BTM we made several plans to visit Maiya’s… but the visit that we finally made was absolutely unplanned :-)
A long day after shopping and before we realized we should have dinner it was 10'oclock, it could be more too!
Would it be closed? Would it be crowded? Clueless of these we parked and went in. Surprisingly open and not crowded our tired faces hit a smile!

The entrance welcomes you with some exquisite and tempting sweets. The food and service hall is at the 1st and 2nd floors. We were led to the second floor.
The lighting and the interiors are pleasant. There were 6-7 tables occupied even at that hour…
We took our seats at one of the corners and without a choice and within minutes we had clear glasses of water, rectangular plates and a silver glass with grape juice!
Talk about people who had to wait in queue for 20 minutes, do a prior booking, and wait in endless serpentine queues!! Our’s was good timing and on a weekend it was great timing!

Not a big fan of the grape juice I didn’t want to taste it, but after much praise from my father I had a sip.
There was hot soup that came in next and it tasted just fine. Next in line was hot and golden yellow greasy puris… with potato curry was simply delicious. Thick vegetable curry popularly known as ‘sagu’ and cabbage curry added to the taste. Then came the capsicum rice which was so delectable it was a blend of just the right amount spices, cashews and of-course the yummy capsicum. The person who served us was full of life and the energy he had even at that late hour needed to be mentioned. He was ever smiling and these are a few things I gathered from him. It has been started 3 months ago, it has been under the entrepreneurial wing of MTR. Not sure if they are the popular Maiya’s who do the outdoor catering (BTW they make awesome food too).

The rice and Sambar, needless to say is the best you could get. The sambar with pumpkin has always been a favorite combination with south Indians and this one was so delicious! The rasam, papad and a cup of curd made an ideal and heavy meal.
On the weekdays they have a meal for Rs. 50 and Rs. 100. On the weekends there is no choice. Heard from friends that the dosas you get are good too, would definitely want to taste them next. So, once you are stuffed with this opulent meal, you’ll find it hard to get off your seat to clean your hands. What’s more, you get back and you will be surprised to find the grand finale, The ice cream or should I say milkshake, because the quantity between the two doesn’t really make a difference! The ice-cream was huge. It is a combination of fruit salad with some tasty sauce more like custard and a scoop of ice-cream. Even after trying hard, none of us could finish it.

The interiors are simple and neat. Two huge paintings of Karnataka’s ancient monuments are endowed on one of the walls adding the color and glee of South India.
It makes me happy that there’s a restaurant which is close in taste and quality to the famous MTR. And is close to home! It is definitely worth more and more visits.
Happy and yummy festival to all Burrpers :-)
