Although restaurants serving Chinese cuisine are a dime a sozen in Bangalore, Mugen certainly stands out for the quality of food served and the ambiance. And I'd also like to point out that although a previous reviewer stated that they weren't asked for a smoking/non-smoking zone, that issue has now been settled coz when I been there, the first thing we were asked was whether we'd like to sit in the non-smoking zone.
With that out of the way, let's get to the food and the settings. There's a long table in the middle (for large groups) and the decorations on it are simply breath taking. The service is quick and efficient, and my only grouse is with the chairs - a little to straight and that makes you sit like the British, stiff and upright. The food is very good, both buffet and a la carte. The mix of the three Asian cuisines (Chinese, Indonasian and Thai) is good and there's enough even for those who only eat the same stuff as cows and goats. Rest assured, you won't come out unhappy (unless it just isn't your day). Great place to go for lunch or dinner with a group on any occasion.

I was there with a few of my colleagues yesterday. The food and the ambiance was great.
But the experience of the tasty food and te appetizing aroma was soon interrupted by the awful smell of cigarette smoke.
The manager told us that there is a seperate smoking/non-smoking areas but alas the waiters need to be trained to ask the customer before they are seated.
This, of course, is a problem with all restaurants in Bangalore. Wonder when the ban on indoor smoking is going to be implemented effectively.
But, other than this little thing. The food and the service was really nice.

Foodyfoodpecker’s review in combination with a craving for Thai food prompted me to try Mugen one Saturday afternoon and I was certainly not disappointed. Royal blue and deep red cushioned traditional high back chairs are paired with sleek silver settees giving the place a warm yet contemporary air. The lighting is soft and mellow but bright enough to read the menu. A bar with an excellent bartender stands in one corner and an open kitchen occupies the other end allowing a lovely and colourful view of noodles and stir-fries being tossed together and cooked up. The wall has beautiful carvings from the Far East and the pleasant music in the background sounded Thai to my untrained ear. Plenty of large circular tables remind you that this is a good place to catch up with a big group of near and dear ones. Seating is spacious and comfortable.
For starters we tried the Thai cuisine and ordered the fried corn with pepper and garlic and the crispy fried vegetables in a plum sauce. Drinks consisted of White Sangria and unlike most places that mix up some stale juice with cheap wine, this was a wonderful surprise. A neat twist on the conventional red wine sangria, this had good white wine and was cool, refreshing and made to the T with tiny bits of fresh fruit in it. The appetizers were both delicious and what crossed my mind was that these people truly know how to cook their vegetables. No soggy, overcooked, over-spiced nonsense here. Each dish was cooked just right, flavoured perfectly and tasted different from the other. The crispy vegetables in the plum sauce were succulently exotic. We ordered soups as well – the chicken clear soup with glass noodles was perfect so was the vegetarian version of the same. The Tom Kha Pat, the Thai soup with coconut milk, lemon grass and vegetables was steamy, spicy and tasty. For the main course, we ordered the steamed rice and the Thai vegetable red curry and the Indonesian influenced Nasi Goreng. Nasi Goreng is fried rice and this one came with chicken and prawns, garnished with fried wontons and a fried egg. Scrumptious comfort food at its best! The Thai vegetable curry was wonderful probably the best I have had in a long time. The child ate the vegetable Thai noodles and finished it in no time pronouncing that as well as the starters as delicious and “not at all spicy, mama”. We did not try the desserts as we were too full.
Mugen serves Thai, Indonesian and Chinese food. The service is excellent without being pretentious – they take the trouble to do a good job. Meal for two with drinks is about Rs.1200. Go there and catch up with your family and friends over a delicious meal – I highly recommend
it!

It is not very often that one comes across a restaurant that you wished you had known earlier about.
I wonder how restaurants get across the word that they are open for business and that they represent a certain level of quality etc.
I read about Mugen a long time ago and assumed it was another one of the restaurants....and slowly I started hearing about it again and again through friends and acquaintances till I could ignore it no further.
Last Thursday the 15th the visit finally happened. A few friends of mine were getting together and we agreed to meet at Mugen.
The entrance is unprepossessing and you can almost miss the restaurant being located on the 3rd floor. We reserved a table and landed up on time. The greeting was smooth and before we knew we were seated at a table.
We decided to order for a round of drinks and that is where the first surprise happened. The beer was chilled and surprise...surprise so were the glasses. Not often do you see such attention to detail. Even the beaker in which they served mixers for rum and vodka were chilled. Well that was a pleasant start...not something you would associate with a restaurant out of a 5 star.
We ordered for starters and one of the gang wanted vegetarian as he had turned vegetarian a day ago . We tried to cajole him into postponing the veggie turning day and try non-veg as veggie in an oriental restaurant was not so appealing. We ordered a chicken starter and a prawn starter for the non veggies and a mushroom starter and a baby corn starter for the veggie. The starters were excellent. The prawns were fresh and succulent and the grilled chicken starter was excellent and the flavours were totally fresh. The big surprise however were the veg starters. I have never had such great veg starters in an oriental restaurant ever. The omnipresent corn flour and MSG seemed to have gone on a holiday and the flavours and textures were mind boggling.
We ordered the main course and the food kept us pleasantly surprised and happy. The vegetable Thai green curry was the best vegetarian Thai curry I have ever had....and so was the Non veg yellow curry. There was an Indonesian stir fried beans which was just heavenly. The food was just too good and conversation died a natural death as we were busy stuffing ourselves.
Post the starters and the main course the desserts were something I was keen to check on. The others agreed although reluctantly predicting that desserts in an oriental restaurants could be skipped. We ordered desserts with the conditionality that they be light to prevent us further distress from over eating. The dessert made with coconut milk and chestnuts was very light and had just about the right amount of sweetness. There was a pumpkin custard that I thought was so so( A personal prejudice- I hate pumpkin) but other enjoyed it. And of course the classical oriental restaurant dessert- Date Pancake with Ice cream. The only thing to fault with this was with the ice cream. The ice cream was a little too frozen for my taste and took effort to slice through with a spoon.
Over all a very delightful experience. The food was superb, the service just right, the attention to detail pleasing and the ambiance was nice and made the restaurant feel very oriental .
I would recommend this place very strongly. It seems to have the ingredients of success just right. Hoping it remains that way.

This restaurant has excellent food and interiors. It needs to work on the service. They have a chef's table which is a great experience. The food is outstanding and worth the money.
The interiors are also excellent. It has the best Thai food I have had outside of Thailand and US.
