Question: How many varieties of dosas and idlis and parathas do you know?
Answer: Doesn't matter what you know, becoz the people at Pongal know a lot more :-)
Forget the ambience, and if you are a foodie it doesn't really matter either. The size of the place might fool you and neither does it look very inviting at the outset... The food more than makes up for everything.
I had never heard of dosa and idli varieties like the kind they serve at The Pongal and having tasted almost all of them by now, they are all good. Tanjavore Masala Dosa, Chettinad Masala Dosa, Malli Idli, Podi Idli etc etc. Add to that an unlimited supply of two types of chutneys, a sambar and a curry - great! A suggestion: try the stuffed veech parathas.
Top of it, The service is fast plus the waiters are friendly. Just for fun, have a look at the way the chef makes the dosas (on the big tawa outside the place) ... worth a watch! By the way, the place is small so you might have to wait to get in if you are in a group.
I first visited this place in January with couple of friends who had been there before, and now 4 to 5 of us go there every week. Not at all heavy on your pockets, a decent to heavy dinner like fare for 5 costs about 200-240 bucks. Enjoy maadi!
