Nice concept

A restaurant called Ugly Duckling ? And so close to home ? My husband and I thought we would take the chance .

Good parking at Sona Towers , as it was after office hours. The restaurant itself is charming , with warm decor, and unpretentious seating . Music was nice , but terrible system , so sounded buzzy.

Prepped by the two other reviews on burrp.com, and with limited time, we went straight for the main course. Stuffed chicken with sesame and nuts,(Rs 180) as well as Greek chops-(Rs 200 ) we chose pork. Its served with a sauce, two slices of garlic bread , and garlic baby potatoes. Both presented well in large platters with nice sauces. I coudnt figure out what mine was though!

There is an overwhelming sweetish flavour to the meat , which takes getting used to . The chops were easier as its a honey glaze. I think both were quite good . The garlic bread was crisp, so it didnt get soggy with an overdose of butter .

We skipped dessert , but had a hot chocolate which was lovely. We will come back for eth Ferrero Rocher next time .

What I would love to try next time are the Make your Own Pasta at 160, some of the more exotic sandwiches, and starters, and perhaps the Lunch Buffet at 200.

Peeve:They add a 10% service charge and VAT directly to the bill, so a a Rs 200 entree could be 26% more - its good to know that.

Service is unobrusive and good , but although pleasant. they are unable to answer questions about the food , as there seems to be a communication problem . The menu is charming , with a little history about the restaurant, the owners, the choice of name . Remembers Hans Christain Andersen's fairy tale The Ugly Duckling ? I thought it was a terrific connect . THe paintings on the wall are fun, and the sofas on the corners are sumptuous.

I think we got a glimpse of the owner- couple as we left - a smiling Indian woman and her Dane husband who seemed very nice .I think they enjoy doing what they do.

An enjoyable meal altogether. Should try more stuff next time.

Nothing to rave about.

Seven members of the Bangalore Gourmets group enjoyed a fun lunch at The Ugly Duckling.
The restaurant has nice interiors but there wasn't a duck in sight (not even on the menu to Vinay's surprise).
We sampled the Nutty chicken and Stuffed Mushrooms for starters. The Nutty Chicken was sweet and the stuffed mushrooms did not have salt.
For the main course, we ordered the Moussaka, Three pepper chicken, Stuffed Chicken, Prawns Souvlaki and Make your own pasta.
The sauce along with the stuffed chicken and the prawns were delicious. The Garlic Bread was very tasty.
And finally for dessert, we ordered the Creme Caramel, White and Dark Chocolate Mousse which was slightly overwhelming, coffee and hazelnut gelato and the Ferrero Rocher wedge which was delicious and sinful!
This is a fun place to try, but overall the food was just ok. Our bill came to Rs 3000 including tips.

Quack Quack @ Ugly Duckling

Ugly Duckling is a catchy name for a restaurant (NOT to be mistaken as a branch of the one in London, U.K.). It is on the 5th floor of the building. Parking is not a problem at night, however can't say the same during the day. It's nice to read the menu preface by the restaurant owners sharing their concept /experience.

I expected paintings, caricatures , a pond of ducks waddling(fake ones ofcourse!) in and entertaining customers; or some sort of new age art of ducks as part of the place, but surprisingly found large black wrought iron(I assume) frogs standing at various spots playing instruments. Quite funky! There's a lounge area (low seating) with a large LCD TV close to the bar area. Currently, only beer is served. The rest of the place is mixed with interesting art work adorning its walls. There's no outdoor seating area or windows, and may create a bit of a claustrophobia for some. Lighting is dull but sort of cozy. Good choice of music - retro + new tracks.

Food is a blend of European (Savory Crepes etc.) Greek (Moussaka, Souvlaki,), Turkish and Italian. Soups, salads, appetizers and beverages like tea and coffee are on the menu.
I like the 'Make Your Own Pasta' concept, where a choice of pastas, sauces, meats, veggies and zing(eg. olives, herbs, sun-dried tomatoes) helps to customize your pasta dish.
Soups are served in innovative leaf-shaped bowls which require careful handling. Both, the Spinach Potato soup and Chicken soup were yummy, but quantity left me disappointed. A suggestion - specify that your lamb needs to be well done; else it could be a tad chewy. Ensure sufficient portions of sauces are served with your meal. The Tzatziki sauce scored over the salsa.

The gourmet style tableware (dishes, plates, platters) is refreshingly stylish, and customer service is good.
A meal for two without any beverages costs up to Rs.700. Portions of everything could be much better.

I was told a lunch buffet is also available, however, it is recommended to call and reconfirm.
