BangaliaNO!

Blame a foodie friend of mine for getting me all excited over the finer points of Kosha Mangsho and Luchi, so when I heard that the gang from work felt like some Bengali fare, I could hardly sit still. I followed willingly as the guy who had tried Bangaliana earlier led us into one of the side streets off 80-ft. Road in Koramangala and walked us up a narrow staircase with some nicely done Bengali cartoons adorning the walls.

The place was pretty crowded for lunch - simple 4-seater table arrangements with un-uniformed waiters rushing between the kitchen and the tables with bowls of rice and more and a nice, old gentleman sitting contentedly behind the bill counter. The place was trying hard to come across as a 'home-food' kind of place and in case you didn't get that on your own, a number of press clippings pasted on the walls made every effort to drive that fact home (pun not intended).

Well, a homely atmosphere and all is fine, but in my home, the tablecloths aren't covered with plastic sheeting and that plastic sheeting isn't covered with a yellow film of oil that refuses to go away inspite of multiple wipings. The cloth that the little guy used to clean the table was enough to turn my gut upside down. The place really lacks basic cleanliness - and as a first impression, it was a complete put-off.

Coming to the food - I was in vegetarian company once again, and tempted as I was to try the speciality mutton preparation, I decided to go with the crowd-puller and ordered the standard meals with a side of chicken curry. The standard meals consisted of rice, a rather watery dal and a vegetable which had some unidentifiable tuber and an equally unidentifiable leaf. What the heck, the chicken curry that was on it's way would make things more interesting, right? I should have known...

- When I say the dal was watery, I mean it - the consistency was rasam-like...and didn't do much to add to the taste of the rice
- The veggies were sweet - I mean, come on, I know the Bengalis have a sweet tooth, but can't that be left for AFTER the meal?
- And the chicken curry? The less said the better - a rather emaciated piece from a rather emaciated bird in some dilute gravy - what is it with these guys and watery gravy, I ask? The same friend I speak of in the first line told me I should have known that 'jhol' (or is it 'jhal'?) means watery gravy. Now why didn't I think of that?

All in all, I couldn't wait to just swallow it all and get out of there. Something else I noticed? Except for our table, EVERY other table in the place had someone or the other speaking Bengali. Maybe that's what you need to like the food there - be a Bengali or know a Bengali.

Don't get me wrong - I think Bengali food has a lot going for it - I mean, the guys love their fish - they can't be that bad. I'm more than willing to give it another shot - this time, I hope, in better-informed company. But if Bangaliana wants to start drawing in non-natives and play a part in making Bengali cuisine more popular, methinks they have a long, long way to go. But if the old couple that runs the place is happy with the way things are, well, I can't blame them for that either.

And, dear foodie friend - you know who you are - you owe me big. The next time I'm in town, lunch is on you!
