The sun doesn't always shine on Sunnys

If you’ve read any of my other reviews on food/restaurants you’ll know that I take food very seriously. I am a confirmed foodie and love trying new places and different cuisines. I’m
fairly experimental too... although I will draw the line at brain, ox tongue and blood pudding etc. There’s just something eww about eating stuff like that. But hey - to each his/her own.

I had heard about Sunnys even before I moved to Bangalore. So when I moved here, this was one of the things on my MUST DO/ MUST EAT AT list.

Sunny’s is located on the very swish and swanky Vittal Mallya Road, just a few 100 meters from UB City. But let me warn you, if you blink, you will miss it.Even though its at the corner of the street, the roundabout next to it is very busy and parking is an absolute nightmare. So, if you don’t have the luxury of a driver at your disposal, be prepared to circle around for a while looking for parking.

I’ll start from the beginning so you have an idea of what this place looks like. One enters through an outdoor area where there is a small bar and a few tables set up. If the weather’s good, you won’t get a place there. The restaurant is on two levels(although I have only seen the ground floor). As soon as you enter, the surly Manager/Head waiter will ask if you have a reservation. Now I, didn’t. It was a weekday and I figured it wouldn’t be an issue. The Manager looked at me, grimaced and then said he’d try and accommodate me. The restaurant was empty other than a table that was occupied by a lone guest (who I later found out was not a guest - he was the owner) and two more tables which had about 4 people on each table, so I was quite puzzled.
Anyway, I just assumed all the tables were probably reserved so I just sat down quietly and frankly, gratefully.

The ambiance... hmn... it’s pretty basic really. Tables, chairs, white table cloths... nothing out of the ordinary. Actually, quite forgettable.

The waiter came after about 10 minutes even though there were loads of waiters hanging around. That’s one thing you notice immediately. There are just so many waiters! Anyway, I decided to have a Ceasers salad as an appetizer and a pasta as my main course. I was with two other friends and they drink so they ordered a bottle of wine to share between them. I stuck to diet coke.

One of my friends ordered a salad and jumbo pawns with tomato tarragon sauce while the other ordered a seafood bisque and a risotto with asparagus, zucchini and mushrooms.

It took 20 minutes for our salads to be served and they put a basket of freshly baked bread on the table accompanied by herb butter. The salad was very good. Just the right amount of everything - so no complaints there.

Then came our main course. The portion of pasta I got was good! I couldn’t finish it! And I must admit, it was very very good. The one who ordered the risotto was also very happy with her choice but my poor friend who ordered the prawns got the shock of her life - she basically got 4 prawns on a plate with some weak sauce.... it was good that my pasta was big enough to share.

The place is quite pricey and even though most guide books say that an average spend for two is about Rs 1000 - I beg to differ. We were three of us. We ordered a bottle of Indian red wine (Grovers), a diet coke, 2 salads, a soup and three main courses. No dessert or coffee. We got a bill for 3800!!!Now either I should have failed in math in school or we had to shell out approx 1300 rupees each!

Now the service. This place is basically an expat hangout.Loads of expat wives hang out there and the owner basically falls over himself to please them. He is not so friendly with the Indian guests unless you are very old clients. He can be very rude and his attitude rubs off on the staff. The waiters have an attitude problem the size of Asia! I was quite upset when we left.

A few weeks later, I had to go back again with a few friends and my husband , who happens to be Swedish. Oh! My! God! What a change! Suddenly I was treated like royalty! I was so disgusted that I vowed never to go back again - even though there are many times that the taste of the superfluous Ceaser’s salad sways my resolve. But I haven’t swayed yet and won’t if I can help it.

I recommend the food definitely but is it worth it to feel discriminated against and pay a heavy price for it (literally)? I think not.

Fake, fake, fake

To cut a long story short, this place sucks. The owners would have you believe you've walked into a New York bistro, but I'm sad to say that form far outstrips substance in this husk of an Italian restaurant.

It starts with the name. What sort of name is 'Sunny's' for an Italian restaurant? For any restaurant, for that matter? I mean, it's a great name for a highway dhaba. But the choice of name in this case is only the preliminary indicator of this establishment's utter and profound lack of quality.

Alright, the music is ok. Unfortunately, the lower level looks something like a dining hall/mess, while the upper level has extravagantly comfortable seating. This arrangement wouldn't be out of place in your local Sagar outlet, but is inexplicable in a place with pretensions as great as Sunny's.

The service is awful. What are these people being snooty about? The mediocre, amateurish food? The incongruous ambience? The garish lighting? When you're ripping every single customer off, the least you can do is be polite about it. Arjun Sajnani and his crew fawn over expats, and make a point of snubbing people of non-European descent. This wouldn't have been unusual in 1937, but when even the foreigners you froth at the mouth over are panning your restaurant, surely something's gone wrong somewhere, eh, Sajnani?

That's even before I get to the food, which is diabolical. Nowhere in the civilized world would this drivel pass for Italian food. These people get *everything* wrong. For fear of running into pages, I'm not going to analyse the specific mistakes they make. It's shockingly bad to the point of hilarity.

But you won't feel like laughing at these prices. Don't even think about the bar, which is a ripoff. If you're willing to spend on a nice Italian meal, go to Fiorano or Via Milano in Koramangala instead. Sunny's is so bad, I don't think it even merits being mentioned in the same paragraph as those two fine trattorias.

Don't even think about this place. You'll regret it.

Rubbish Italian Food

I went to Sunny's and I must say, it was one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to in Bangalore.

For entree, I had chicken won tons. It was soaked with soya sauce. So what sauce did they give as a side dish? They gave soya sauce!

For main meal, my cousin had a lamb lasagne and I shared a pepperoni pizza with my other cousin. The lamb lasagne had too much tomato sauce and not enough cheese to cover the sour taste of tomato. The cheese on the pizza tasted like grilled cheese on toast that my mum used to make. The burnt smell of the cheese convinces me that they didn't use mozarella.

For desert we had green tea ice cream, chocolate and hazelnut mousse and tiramissu. The green tea ice cream tasted like pista ice cream without the pistaccio. I could only taste the chocolate in the mousse and tiramissu had an eggy taste.

I also had a latte. I had to peel the skin off the top of the milk. I don't have to do that when I go to coffee day.

The only great things about the restaurant are the waiter service, which was efficient and friendly as well as the complimentary bread and garlic butter.

I give 1 star for the food and 5 stars to the service, hence the average rating for the restaurant.

I am from Australia, one of my cousins is from Dubai and the other cousin is from Bangalore.

A sunny place for western food

The first thing that strikes you about Sunny's is its very chic decor. The place has been done up in minimalistic black and white and looks just perfect for the cuisine it serves. Add to this the huge number of expats you'll always spot here and and you almost feel transported.

The food varies from good to very good (some of the pastas are quite nice as is the veg Lasagna). The service is exceptionally good but the atmosphere tends to be a tad snooty and walking in unprepared, wearing your throw-on Sunday apparel may not be a great idea.

The dessert menu is scrumptiously long and has some fabulous variety on it. The takeaway breads are OK (Fiorano makes them better) but the fresh mozzarella cheese is quite nice (and expensive!).

On the whole, a decent place to have a meal at but the costs are a wee bit prohibitive and you're better off saving it for a special occasion.

Good Italian

Sunny's lets the flavors of the ingredients show through with simple but interesting preparations. I had roast lamb chops (prepared rare, as I asked, with no arguments or questions) which were served in what appeared to be a reduced balsamic glaze with sprigs of thyme and whole rosemary. Quite tasty. My artner had penne in a gorgonzola cream sauce that was also very tasty, though I commented that while the penne was properly "al dente" the cooking water hadn't been quite hot enough - the pasta was a tiny bit gummy. We were brave and had this with a Ceasar Salad.

The second time we decided to try the pepperoni pizza. Since I make pizza myself I was interested to see what I would be up against. Sadly this pizza was a disappointment. The crust had a soft bread-like crumb, not nearly chewy enough. It was relatively thick, but most disappointingly it had been baked on a perforated metal pan so that it couldn't brown properly or crisp up. The sauce was flavorful, and the mozarella was good but could not make up for the crust.

However we had ordered a fresh tomato, onion, mozarella appetizer that was dressed with a good balsamic and that was quite excellent.

We'll be back.
