Cheap and Best!

If you are looking for a quiet, romantic, candle light dinner in a restaurant with soft ambience and music, Amruth is definitely NOT the place.

Amruth is a very popular food joint located on St. Marks Road. to be very specific, it's right below Global Access on the same road. You probably won't see it while passing by because it's on the ground floor of the building. When you enter this place, the first thing you notice is the sign, "Beware of mobile thieves." Ok then. So basically, Being the paranoid person that I am, I took that to think that someone will inject me with some kind of drug, take me to a place far far away, steal my phone and then kill me. Basically, just remain cautious. It gets very crowded sometimes, and some people take that to their advantage.

Ok, moving on, so I went to the counter and looked at the short and sweet menu. They have the basic South Indian food - Idli, Dosa, Vada etc. They also have the basic North Indian Food - Chapati, Puri, etc. They also have sandwiches - Rs 20-30, chaat - Rs 15 - 25 , juice - Rs. 20-30, thalis - Rs 30 and ice cream - Rs 15 - 30.. And not to forget, coffee, tea, bournvita, and the like.

This place is like dirt cheap compared to most places nowadays and they actually provide a quantity meal. Things I would recommend are:

1. Rava Idli - priced at Rs. 12 - awesome, awesome, awesome.

2. Rava Dosa - priced at Rs. 20 - Yummy!

3. North Indian or South Indian Thali - priced at Rs. 30 - very filling, you get rice, a choice of puri or roti, curd rice, subzi, pickle and the works. =)

4. Idli - Priced at Rs.6 - there are people I know that actually come to Amruth, buy idlis and take them for people in Mumbai. Enough said.

5. Last but not the least, Curd Rice - Priced at Rs. 12 - Take a trip to heaven.

Now, going to the other details. The place has marble counters, where you can place your food and eat, either standing or there are stool-type things where you can sit. There is technically no seating unless you're having a North Indian Thali in which case they let you sit inside, but mind you it's again just basic seating. Nothing extravagant.

Music, zilch, zero, none. But that's the charm of this place I guess. This place is self-service, so no worry about waiters acting bonkers. The service is pretty quick - shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes to get your meal. The main thing about this place is, it's hygienic. Thank goodness for that.
They also provide free water - zero B water to be exact. It is disturbing sometimes to see not too young, but tnot oo old kids cleaning up the place.

What else, to say about Amruth, there was once when I went and ordered for my favorite, Curd Rice, for take away and the man at the counter said something. Being the smartass that I am, I was like "Kannada gothe illa" which means I don't know Kannada in Kannada. And he replied - "I was speaking in English". Quite embarassing.

This place is extemely popular with work people, so avoid going in the afternoon unless you want to get caught in a stampede of cranky office people who are on a time schedule. They do accept Sodexho vouchers.

Some things to note - NO non-veg food, NO credit card accepted, NO home delivery. They do have take away though.

Amruth - cheap and best. Value for money.
