UnHip Asia

The first disappointment came when we entered through the entrance right next to the men's restroom. The decor was mediocre and reminded me of wannabe cheap restaurants that thrive across the city before falling to the dogs. The walls were painted shit brown (there is no other way of describing it) and the tables were covered in black runners that had seen better days maybe a century ago. Not cleaned properly i could see crumbs of meals past. There were paper lanterns that would be comfortable in a restaurant called 'spicy chinese' with plastic tables. (but good tasty food im sure) The cutlery was cheap looking and the white crockery looked like it had come from the 99 store across the corner. After seeing a few celebrities around (due to which poor common us had to wait for the service for an uncommonly long time) we decided maybe the food would be worth it.

There was korean festival going on and we passed it in favor of the japanese version. The table next to us had ordered korean and were complaining about it in loud voices. particularly about the lack of freshness and the limpness of the vegetables and too much salt. Little did we know we would be joining in soon.

First to come was a combination tempura with a watery, no taste whatsoever sauce. I have eaten tempura before and love the batter taste. This was not just bland but a little rubbery. My discomfort with the place had now increased to a point of irritation. After waiting for another long interval during which all we could do was glower at the waiters, the main course came. Beef teriyake was requested as medium but came as overdone to a car tyre consistency. The sauce was ok. Garlic rice was ordered with it which came cold and caked together in a lumpy mass (to make a point we did not order sticky rice but fried garlic rice)

As most foodies know it is very very difficult to find a good piece of pink salmon in chennai. (if you do know a place please let me know) I love the taste and was excited to see it on the menu. As with all sea food drowning it in spices and overloading it with sauces is a last resort to hide staleness. Fresh fish does not need an overload. The other tastes should blend in and complement not overpower the taste of fish. Im am extremely sorry to say but the salmon here (in lemon butter sauce) was such a tragedy that i couldnt even eat it after thinking about the huge amount i was paying for it. The lemon butter sauce i know is a mild yellowy buttery concoction, this was the color of the walls i mentioned before. Thinking this may be the asian version of lemon butter sauce i dug in.
It needed a large gulp of beer to make it go down my throat without me throwing up. It was bitter and so salty i suspect the salmon came out of a cheap can. I could not make out any other taste. The poor fish had drowned in this vile liquid and if you had given me a slab of processed artificial meat in its place i wouldnt have found a difference. Salmon is a beautifull fish, they raped it and then defiled its corpse and put it on my plate. I will never forgive Hip Asia nor would a million horses drag me in again.

Excellent Food

I have eaten once, and i loved it. They serve a mix of thai, chinese and some other SE asian cuisines. It was quite authentic in taste. I will rate it 4 because it was quite expensive, but then i was fine as i was on a business trip :)
