Haute cuisine in a not so haute location

I love the food here.Period! This little gem of a place tucked in a house in Ulsoor, is the place to go to for some very elegant food. There are all of 6 tables here and its open only from 12 - 5pm and if ambience is what you are hoping for here, this is not the place for you.The owner of course did say they would expand in due course of time and trust me, this restaurant would then be THE hotspot of Bangalore.

For appetisers, I had the Fig Salad and the Hummus with Pita Bread. The fig salad was so delicately flavored that all I could say was 'Wow' and go on stuffing myself with it, with no more attention to anyone/anything but the salad! The Hummus was also well done and was very satisfactory. The fresh lime sodas we ordered were very fresh and had a very homemade feel to it.For the main course I ordered the Susana(pesto pasta), while my friends ordered the Seer Fish Medallion and the Moroccan Stew with Cous Cous. While this was not the best pesto pasta I've had, it was nothing to complain about. The Moroccan Stew was very delicious, it had a slight Thai flavor at the same time being very unique and none like I've tasted before. It is accompanied by a plate of well done Cous Cous, some spicy sauce and fried onions, the combination together is very flavorful.Since I am a veggie, I myself didnt have the Seer Fish, but my friend's opinion was, it was one of the best fish dishes he's had anywhere. This dish comes with a potato mash and sauteed veggies as well.

Now for the best part, we ordered the Carrot cake with ice cream, a Brownie fudge cake with ice cream and a Banana Walnut Cake(accompanied with butter).I have just one word for all three, scrumptious!!I actually had to call the owner and ask him if he had bought them from somewhere, and much to my surprise he said, his wife had made all of them!So people who havent yet explored this restaurant, I suggest you get here as fast as you can.

The service here is very quick and courteous and is a great value for money restaurant(came to about Rs.1400 for all the food mentioned above). One thing to keep in mind though is that they take only cash,no cards.

Nothing rogue about this place

Tucked away behind no.119 next to FotoFlash is a quaint and quiet little place with just 6 tables and a whole lot of plants with a quintessential backyard look and feel, serving Italian/European cuisine. Thankfully there aren't too many who know of this place as yet and so my friend and I were able to get a table as soon as we walked in. The menu is little limited, but I can assure you that every item on it is awesome!

The owner was a nice gentleman who took our orders and explained about the dishes while taking the orders and while serving them. We started off with customary lime juices and the soup of the day, which was a cream of tomato, and it was perfect - not too thick, not too thin, and not too sweet. Along with it, we had the special salad of the day - a savoury pannacotta with caramelised figs in a balsamic vinaigrette reduction, which was a first for me in terms of taste, and it was quite light yet delightful to taste. Also as part of the appetizers was a 'just like crab meat' with a garlic mayonnaise. This was the first time I had even heard of this, and it's actually fish that is used to replicate crab meat, and just for the effect, a crab claw was added. The garlic mayo perfectly complimented the dish.

For the main course, we had another special, seer fish medallions in a mildly spicy Putanesca sauce and a herb roasted chicken with a mild lemony sauce along with mash and beans. Both the dishes were good and even at the end of the meal, I certainly didn't feel heavy. And so we rounded up lunch with a sweet peach pannacotta for dessert, and I have to say that I think pannacotta is my new favourite in the dessert section. The only negative about this place is that there were a lot of flies because of a drain behind the place (not visible to us, but so we were told), and they were quite a nuisance, so the owners would do good to keep one of those electric pest control thingies to kill flies. However, I'm not going to let that one aspect lower the ratings of what of quite obviously an extremely pleasing lunch. A point to note is that this place is open only from 12 to 5 and closes after that, so lunch is the only option here. I think costs have gone up and management must have changed since the previous reviewer visited this place - this meal, with taxes, came to a tad over 1200, which we thought was well worth it considering the quality, quantity and the unique dishes served here, and from what the owner told us, they've been open for about 4 months. So start making a beeline towards this place at the earliest.

Well-kept secret...

Hmmm, you couldn't be blamed for not knowing that this place existed - the Secret Garden Cafe is all of 5 tables cosily tucked away in the backyard of a house that also doubles up as a nursery and a fusion clothing / furnishings store. I happened to land up there one rainy afternoon with a friend who had a craving for pasta and swore by this place for some decent comfort food.

It's a part-outdoor, part-covered sitting area with some basic metal 'n' wood tables and chairs. The walls are covered with someone's sincere attempt at folk art. Lots of potted plants all over the place round up the 'nice' feeling that this place seems to exude.

The menu is on one of those rollable(?) black sheets hung up on the wall with all that's available neatly handwritten in various colours of chalk. The food is mostly continental and European - soups, salads, pastas, sandwiches, beverages and desserts make up the list.

The staff comprises a couple of sweet old ladies who double up as both cooks and waitresses. Very patient, always smiling and willing to cook your food just the way you like it - a little less chilli, a little extra thick, as the case may be. And they do it right there in full view - the chopping, slicing and whipping happens in a cute little kitchen that's just next to the seating area.

The food is more than decent - we ordered a creamy chicken pasta and a 'herby' egg sandwich and a couple of iced teas (standard Lipton premix, methinks, with a sprig of mint tossed in for that touch of authenticity). The pasta was cooked just right and good on flavour - the white sauce didn't blank out the taste of the whole dish. The egg sandwich too was good, with a moist filling between 2 slices of soft brown bread - served with greasy potato chips though, which I thought could've been better.

We were just thinking of dessert when the rain started to come down and seated as we were in the part-outdoor section of the cafe, we had to chow down quick and beat a hasty retreat indoors.

So definitely a place I would recommend if you happen to be by the Ulsoor lake and are looking for a slow, laid-back lunch or an evening snack. The place shuts by 6.30 pm or so, so dinner is a no-go. The place IS small and fills up fast - it's already a favoured place for lunch for the folks who have their offices that side of Ulsoor, so get there a little sooner than you would any other place.

A meal for 2 with soft drinks & dessert: about Rs.300.
