I stumbled across Ugly Duckling thanks to burrp.com. Finding decent continental restaurants in North Bangalore can be quite a chore and the positive reviews put this place on my "must try" list.
I finally got to go to Ugly Duckling on a sleepy Saturday afternoon post a disappointing film at Sigma Mall. The restaurant is on the quieter end of Miller's Road - near St.Ann's School and the new Safina Towers. You enter the nondescript office block, ride up to the 5th floor and enter the cozy little place that is Ugly Duckling.
We started out with a Caesars salad and an ice tea (for me). The salad was hearty - both in portion size and taste. It could quite easily make a meal for one person. We followed this up with an Ugly Duckling steak and a Spaghetti Carbonara. My steak came as well done as requested, with some nice red & yellow peppers and potato wedges as accompaniments. My sister's spaghetti, on the other hand, was just about ok. While they definitely did not skimp on the bacon or the overall portion size, the sauce was just a bit too runny for her taste. I must admit it tasted way better when we ate it later that evening though.
The dessert was the biggest let down. We ordered the caramel custard. Now, I love caramel custard. It's a simple, unpretentious dessert which is divine when done well and decent in most cases. This one, however, was an absolute disaster. The custard was rubbery and the caramel was bitter. It made for an unpleasant end to an otherwise average meal.
Despite that, I think Ugly Duckling’is definitely worth another visit.
