The Chocolate Room’s a wonderful concept. A place that’s all about the yummy goodness of chocolate? You’ve got to love it irrespective of how old you are, right? Umm, not so much.
If, like the girls from Bishop Cotton Girls School across the road, you’re all about ultra sugary stuff at decent prices, you’ll love it. If you’re expecting a wide range of products and an above average attention to the quality of food, prepare to be disappointed.
My sister and I visited after a light lunch at Tasty Tangles down at UB City, so we didn’t go all out on the chocolate like we would’ve otherwise. We started with two chocolate shots – the White Lady and the Choco Rum. My Choco Rum shot was thick, smooth and warm. Apart from the fact that it was very, very sweet, it was rather nice. My sister’s White Lady shot, however, tasted like white chocolate and milk powder dissolved in a little too much water.
The biggest disaster was the Melted Chocolate Pancake (sic). It sounded lovely in theory – two pancakes layered with chocolate sauce and topped with white chocolate, marshmallows, vanilla ice cream and even more chocolate sauce. The actual thing was a disaster with two dime sized pancakes that looked & tasted like 2 slabs of wet cardboard smothered in an ocean of ultra sweet (again) chocolate sauce. We ate the marshmallows and the ice cream and admitted defeat.
All in all, I think the place will do quite well for itself thanks to the teens from my alma mater (and the adjacent Boys School). The proximity to the school, the bright orange color scheme, the reasonable prices (with a 10% student discount!) and the sugar overload are sure to delight them. If you’re older and just a little more demanding in your tastes, you might want to visit once and then go elsewhere.
