One of its kind, and is known for introducing the theatre concept to the lay man in Bangalore, attracting them in big numbers – all this happened after the inauguration of the much awaited Ranga Shankara by Arundathi Nag. Giving the same name as that of her husband Shankar Nag, who was and still continues to be one of the favorite heroes of all times in the Kannada Film Industry, attracts crowds from different genre – from young to old, from amateurs to the seasoned actors.
The plays generally are timed at 3:30PM and at 7:30PM everyday but on Mondays, as Mondays are a weekly off!
Ranga Shankara has given opportunities to umpteen numbers of new groups to stage their plays and introduce themselves to this industry.
The performances include special shows for children, matinees, youth festival and an Annual Festival which comes together to give Bangalore the best of Local and International Contemporary Theatre Experience.
They have a free seating (i.e., no numbering unlike a movie theatre) which is pretty comfortable. No matter where you sit, the performance remains intimate and immediate.
If I need to talk about the acoustics, RS has one of the best I’ve found in Bangalore. No matter where you sit, you get to experience the play same way. Be it in the first row or the last row. You would be strictly asked to keep your phone switched off. There have been times where I’ve noticed; you get to hear the phone vibrating too in the silent mode.
Absolute cleanliness is maintained in the campus. The floor, the stairs and the loos are spic and span. For those who love books and are voracious readers, “Shankars – The Book Shop” is the place to be. And all those who are foodies and others who love munching goodies, could go to the small café there. I love their akki rottis, brownie and the lassis.
All in all, RS totally rocks and is one of my favorite places in Bangalore to hand out!!
