The second half of R.K.Narayan's fictitious town Malgudi's name is derived out of Basavanagudi, the culturally significant locality of Bangalore. One can find a handful of hotels in this locality, yet serving not only the authentic Karnataka cuisine but the culture, heritage and taste of Old Bangalore. Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room belongs to this list of Old Bangalore Hotels which has maintained the authenticity, ambience, taste and mood of the Old City.
Lying in the quieter section of DVG Road, this hotel is known for its Khali Dosas. Hot and soft served with tasty chutney & vegetable sagoo, one could feel heaven in every bite. Sorry… did I say bite? No… actually you need not bite the dosas here. They just melt in your mouth. These Dosas coupled with carrot halwa and coffee becomes a very ideal start for a lazy week end morning.
Ofcourse you cannot expect a great ambience or privacy in here. The hotel is divided into 2 sections one large common section and a smaller family section. The furniture & utensils used here are atleast a generation old and so is the style of serving the food. There isn’t any uniform for the waiters here. Though old, this place is very clean and the food looks very hygienic.
What ever the case, if one wants to experience the Old Bangalore and way of life…. Its yet here… Come to Basavanagudi… Come to Mahalakshmi.
