After the success of Barbeque Nation, and the subsequent super hit Absolute Barbecues, table grill restaurants have become very popular in Hyderabad. Unique Barbeque is one of the newer places which have started in Banjara Hills, the same place which houses Cinemax.
I am a huge fan of Babu Ganeshan and ABs, who set a very high standard. However decided to visit this place on a Friday afternoon with no expectations at all. We reached at 12:30 pm and were promptly seated. About 50% of the tables were already occupied (the place was absolutely full at 1:30 pm). Soon the table grill was set up and the food started arriving.
The first to arrive was a Tangri Kabab on our plate. It was very spicy but delicious, we immediately ordered a repeat. The prawns on the grill were less spicy and went well with the tartar sauce. The fish too was more of an oriental preparation. The chicken marinated in green sauce was good, but tad high on salt.
Among the veg items I liked the pineapple cubes mounted on a skewer. The cubes had Indian masala on it which was really flavorful after putting on the grill. The paneer cubes also tasted good. They have the customary potato or corn based starters available in the other barbecue joints.
They have a welcome drink as part of the deal. I took a pineapple shake which was quite thick. My wife asked for a Virgin Mojito which she did not like, as she felt it was low on lime juice. It was promptly changed with more lime juice added.
The main course was pretty elaborate with Crab fry, Telangana Chicken (spicy chicken), Chicken Liver Masala and Mutton Curry. I loved the Crab Fry which was thin shelled crabs cooked in dry masala. The Telangana Chicken also tasted nice (though I was not aware of a chicken dish with such a name).
The dessert spread was decent too. Though I am not a dessert fan loved the Shahi Tukda.
Overall a decent package priced at Rs 688 (inclusive of tax). It is a more economical version of a table grill place. Regarding the ambience it had a clean look but I would have liked the place to be more brightly lit. Service was very enthusiastic – the waiters really pampered us.
Over a period of time, the restaurant will need to serve good food consistently and improve it if they want to emulate their successful peers. Right now it is not doing too badly as was apparent from the crowd I saw there.
