Tempura-d Steel

Went to this restaurant as a part of the Hyderabad Foodies Club today. I had never had the opportunity to try Asian food before, so jumped with joy when I heard of this meet.

The restaurant has a sort of a royal Thai ambience with a small chefs kitchen in the middle where you can see the prawns and crabs and all the slicing and dicing.

We started with the sushi (pretty obvious) - the Prawn tempura ura maaki (maaki means 'roll' not the slang you are generally used to) and crab meat sushi with tobiko. With the sushis came a plate of wasabi, ginger and soya sauce. Apparently before having the sushi, the wasabi and soya sauce are mixed, the sushi is dipped in that and then the ginger is added as a flavour topping. This is the way it is had in Japan and other parts of the world. (Ask the waiter to show it to you , he'll do it gladly)

Next were the starters - Panang garlic fish and Dry chicken with cashew nut. The garlic fish was crisp and soft inside. It tasted wonderful with the black sauce(?) that is served along with it. The dimsums are also worth trying with the red sauce. I don't say that this is the best place for dimsums, but they really taste awesome.

By the time we came to Tom Yum Nam Khon Soup and Chicken Satay, I was already 70% full. I began doubting my appetite even more once I was done with the soup and 3 rounds of satay. But here comes the part which I like the most. I see a small green chinaware in front of me filled with water (or at least that is what it looked like to me). One sip of that and woah !!! it felt like my appetite was back again. The green tea used generally as a palate cleaner served the purpose of rejuvenating my appetite too.

Getting ready for the second innings, we first had Thai Panang Chicken Curry (Red Curry) , Jasmine rice. Though it didn't seem mind blowing, we chomped our way through the main course.

And at last, we were ready for the dessert... Jaggery Coconut Ice Cream and Abong balik !!! Ohh , what a treat it was... The ice cream tasted like a creamier and more frozen kheer with coconut garnishing, while the Abong balik was dry fruit khoa types padded with golden fried wafers.

Overall an amazing experience and a must visit for every single foodie !!

best pan asian in town

The khow suey soup here is excellent, and so are some of the other dishes (if one orders correctly). By far the best pan asian restaurant in town.

Pan Asian food

I attended the Foodies meet of the "Hyderabad Foodies" Facebook group here . The set menu served on the table had about 22 items - from 7 countries Pan-Asia.

I had concentrated more on the starters - loved the Panang Fish as well as vegetables tossed in sauce. However what stood above the rest was definitely the chilli chicken - soft and succulent and the right amount of spices.

Especially loved the two sushies (crab-avocado and prawn tempura). Loved both with soya sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger.

The dimsums both veg and chicken were good - albeit a bit oily. Missed the peanut sauce with the satay. The Tom Yum Soup was awesome - I am a Tom Yum freak who tends to try this in all chinese/South East Asian restaurants and this was one of the best with strong coconut base and herb flavor.

In the main courses, my favorite was the Thai Chicken Curry. The veg curry also had its unique taste.

The Jaggery coconut ice cream is the signature dish of the restaurant. Abong balik - the other sweet was loved by many - though I found it a bit too sweet for my comfort.

Finally, superb hospitality from the Mekong Team. Their GM Mr Javed, Chef Mr Mukherjee and the entire team was at hand to explain the items on the menu and answer all queries of the foodies.

Best Thai Cuisine in Town

Mekong, Marigold is a sister concern of Green Park, which is majestically designed with lots of grandeur. I am very impressed with the look and feel itself, even before trying the food. The planning for this event was going on since 2 months how to present? What to have and what not to have on the menu? What price? After plenty of negotiations and discussions with Mr.Joydeep (Mgr, Green Park), finally it was planned on a very specific set menu with lots of varieties from different countries. He was very persistent to have this event happen exclusively for the Hyderabad Foodies.

The ambiance is simply exquisite, done in bright blue and chocolate shades. Wonderful way to have an enticing cuisine at a very alluring place. All was set for the Foodie's day and everyone was surprised with the head count - 67 foodies turned up for the event. That's a humongous figure considering the buffet price, this shows price is not a constraint for quality food.

Finally the day has arrived for me to try Sushi's, which I never tried in the past (due to my own reservations). This time I was hell bent on trying it and to my amaze this was very delicious and appetizing.

I would like to explain each dish I had on the foodies menu;

SUSHI
1. Prawns tempura ura maki - done to perfection.
2. Avocado and real crab meat sushi roll wrapped with tobiko - especially the flavours of avocado and crab were perfectly captured.
3. Pickled sweet radish and bell pepper sushi roll - actually you can feel the very delicate taste of radish.
4. Aspragus shitake maki - the asparagus was very fresh and tasted good.


STARTERS
1. Panang garlic fish - initially it was little salty, got this to the notice of the chef and the very moment he got it changed. It had right amount of ingredients and perfectly cooked keeping intact the juiciness of the fish.
2. Dry chilly chicken with cashew nut - this was something different from the regular Chilly chicken. The chicken was tender, moist and the outer layer little crispy. The perfect starter for a wonderful meal.
3. Wok tossed vegetable with male sambal sauce - I did not have this but got to know from fellow foodies it was also tasty.
4. Crispy lotus stem tossed with sweet chilli sauce - this very different from the regular dishes and I strongly recommend this one.

DIMSUM
1. Tibetan chicken momo - absolutely flawless is the only word I can say.
2. Mix vegetable dimsum - I did not have this but got a good feedback from fellow foodies.


SALAD
Thai green papaya salad - this is a must try for anyone who visits this place. The flavors and taste of the salad is so unique and exemplary.

ORIENTAL GRILLED
1. Chicken satay - grilled boneless chicken, which are well marinated and really melted in the mouth. I had more than coupe of servings but resisted myself as I want to try other dishes.
2. Assorted mushroom tepanyaki - got good response from fellow foodies.


SOUP
1. Tom yum nam khon (veg or chicken) I was forced to try this, Chicken Tom yum nam Khon soup and was stunned with the flavors in perfect sync.

MAIN COURSE
1. Thai chicken panang curry - the curry was very flavorsome with right amount of ingredients and chicken was very tender.
2. Vegetables with green thai curry - I had tried on insistence of couple of foodies and I should say it did impress me, the veggies were very crisp and fresh.
3. Home style laos vegetables
4. Chilly basil vegetables fried rice - this is very different from the routine fried rice, you can actually feel the flavor of basil.
5. Steamed jasmine rice - the rice was very soft and perfect.
6. Vegetables hakka noodles - noodles were very tender and with right amount of veggies which made it a perfect dish.

DESSERT
1. Abong balik - it is a dry fruits dessert with lots of Ghee.
2. Jagerry coconut ice cream - this is very subtle dessert and goes well in combination with Abong balik.

After a very long time I had to say awesome, wonderful, amazing food coupled with excellent service, hospitality and ambiance". The response of the staff was astounding; without you noticing they served dish after dish.

Ambiance is perfect in sync with the food. The tabled and chairs are stainless and perfectly arranged. Wash rooms are maintained odorless and very hygienic. Parking is not an issue.

I should appreciate and thank Mr.Joydeep along with Mr.Nagabhusan, Mr.Lokesh and the entire staff, the Master Chef Mr.Mukherjee and Executive Chef Mr.Partha for making this event such a fabulous one to bear in mind for a long time. And special mention has to be made for Mr Javed Ahmed, GM, Marigold for his cooperation and support.

Overall I am very happy with service, ambiance, quality of food and hospitality of the entire staff; I very strongly recommend this place for trying quality Thai cuisine.

Most authentic Pan-Asian food ever :)

After planning for almost weeks and our plans getting postponed me and my friends walked into Mekong one fine weekday for dinner. I must say the place went above my expectations, the decor was awesome and the food was a delight. From the vietnamese soup to lotus stem starter, pad-thai and yellow thai curry everything was authentic.

I am a die-hard thai curry fan , unfortunately not many people serve the real deal, but the one at mekong makes me want to go back again, it was just like the thai curry I have tasted abroad.

absolutely loved it. the service was gr8 too. Hope they remain awesome like this forever.

Best Lobster

Awsum food is too awsum

Burrp Chef's Table - A beautiful evening with great people and new food. As you locate the door and open it you are greeted into a beautiful a bit dimly lit fishing nets which hang above the tables and right at the time the flowing yellow mekong river patterns on the roof catch your eye which look beautiful and inviting. There is live grill in the centre but taken further to a round table for 10.

At First, they brought in some shrimp flavored crispies which tasted really good and green beans steamed lightly in raw oil and garlic along with jasmine flavored green tea. Followed by chef's intro to the menu. We were served ebi ura maki which tasted nice and the sauces along with it enhanced the taste perfectly. Then came the dimsums which were hot delicious. The main course had many items including veg and non veg. But the best among all were tofu fried and baked fish not to forget the lobster with cremadi sauce. I keep forgetting the names but all that was served was good and felt good with the light music being played along. Then came the blockbuster - crusted coconut icecream with water chestnuts. I mean it looked so simple but was heavenly. The first spoon itself made me want more and more. While going back we got chocolate brownies compliments from chef which was again a super duper hit.

In the end i would like to thank burrp for an amazing evening.

My stomach is happy hence i am happy :P

Awesome Pace To Have Food

Mekong has quite decent and bright décor. It feels amazing to be there with friends eating and gossiping. They serve good food. They are amazingly cooked and are awesome to have. Also, service is really very fast. Staffs are courteous and friendly. They serve nicely and also suggest their specialty at the time of order. Nice place I must say.

As the Mekong Flows...

For every Asian food aficionado just Chinese never is enough.

Oriental cuisine is a very diverse and bountiful culinary experience, so when we heard about Mekong and it’s offering of a Pan Asian menu – we jumped on board for an exclusive dinner at the restaurant which is part of the Marigold Hotel in Ameerpet.

The head hostess – pleasantly oriental looking, ushered us to a centrally located table where we could soak in the ambiance and the décor to the fullest.

The décor is contemporary and the ambiance is Oriental with shades of the Mediterranean. We loved the boat and river motifs spread across the floor. Mekong for those who do not know is a river that flows through 7 regions of South East Asia. So the river and boat theme is perfectly set and is a very soothing visual experience. A special mention goes for the wavy roof, the fishing net draperies, the island live counter and a touch of textbook China décor – the birdcage lamp shades. All in all a very unique experience fitting a restaurant of this demographic.

We decided to follow the Chef’s recommendations to the menu. Another interesting fact about the menu is that the items are listed according to the path the river takes. The regions covered include – Tibet, China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma and Japan. This calls for an exhaustive gastronomic menu and Mekong does not disappoint.

The complimentary green jasmine tea was a given, and were expecting a Kimchi salad to be served as an add on, but we were pleasantly surprised to be served Shrimp crackers and stir fried snow peas as accompaniments to the menu. The crackers went well with the crunchy and fresh snow peas. We were tempted to finish them all off but we wanted to retain our appetite for the things to come.

The Chef recommended the Khaw Suey soup and some Sushi to start with. Have had the Burmese soup once earlier in Pune and on that occasion it was a meal on its own with the main spice blended coconut milk soup plated with an assortment of small side dishes like fried noodles, boiled egg, greens, fried onions, spices, lemon peel etc to be added into the soup as per individual tastes. It was confusing and could not really make sense out of how it is actually supposed to be had. So was glad when our Khaw Suey arrived with all the above ingredients added to the soup. The soup was divine – smooth, creamy, blissfully spiced with a hint of sour and tang. The color was a rich orange with a slice of red pepper adding a lot of contrast. The look and feel of the soup was very rich and it turned out to be one of the best soups we had ever laid eyes and tongue upon !!!

Sushi arrived all colorful and they were rolled fresh at the island counter. We went for the non vegetarian Ebi Ura Maki and Avocado Shitake Maki as the vegetarian option. Served with the usual light soy sauce and Wasabi. Both the Sushi were fresh and were seasoned well. The roll was spot on and was of perfect texture when chewed. Some of the Sushi felt a little too fermented though I feel it was due to the over soaking in the soy on our part. Wanted to ask if they served Sashimi too – but thought our stomachs needed space for the remainder of the courses too, so we refrained.

We wanted to taste the best that the restaurant had to offer – and since that is a lot, we asked to be served smaller portions of the items so that we can savour more of the delightful menu.

We had to have the Dim Sums, we were served a mix platter of the same right from Tibetan to Chinese. The dough was perfectly cooked and the stuffing was just perfect. There was none of the starchy texture that you would normally associate with the said item. They have a specialist dim sum chef and this shows in the output. Best dim sums/momos in town. Period.

Main course we wanted to have food from the entire breadth of South East Asia so we were recommended the Cong Pao Yang Rou (Lamb glazed with a light brown sauce), Gai Pad Bai Gaprow (Minced chicken stir fried with chilli and ginger flakes), Gan Bian Siji Dou (Green long beans sautéed with ginger, garlic and other spices), Phad Thai (flat noodles) and Dan Be Con (Egg fried rice with spring onion). Yes I noted down those tongue twisterly named items for future reference ;)

The main course was a tad disappointing – maybe with experience of all the dishes served thus far, our expectations were set pretty high. The food just did not live up to them sadly.

The greens were too gingery, the minced chicken was not seasoned enough. The saving grace was the lamb – delightfully tender, perfectly spiced and very well cooked in a light sauce which was blended and seasoned to a perfection, the rice was nothing special but was light and the flavour was fresh due to the fresh spring onion. The flat noodles were just about ok and we felt was a bit under-cooked.

We could not complete the main course and since the food rendered into a bit of disappointment, we were looking forward to dessert to make up.

We had the house special ice cream – a concoction of coconut cream and jaggery and the Thap Thim Krawp – another house special, which had coconut milk floating over water chestnuts in strawberry essence.

Amazing!!!

Was expecting the ice cream to be coconuty in texture and have bits of coconut within, but there was no hint of any coconut in it or jaggery for that matter. It was plated in a martini glass. Simple white scoop garnished with a mint leaf adding colour. The flavour was fresh, sublimely sweet and very refreshing. We asked for seconds – which we usually never do for desserts.

Thap Thim Krawp cannot be detailed in words and needs to be experienced. The mix of the smooth cream with the gelatinous water chestnuts and the flavour infused strawberry essence, all put together just explodes into a sweet symphony in the mouth.

The desserts more than made up for the slightly disappointing main course !!!

Don’t really know how much all this cost, the bill was footed by another friend. But I am told that it is expensive. An average meal for two without liquor ( they have a well stocked bar with all imported and Indian brands right from single malts to more affordable blends) could set you back by around Rs. 2500 – 3000

How would I rate it? For prices that steep the ambiance and the décor need to be top of the line and Mekong doesn't disappoint on that front, the menu and food range is exhaustive, the service is five star, the Sushi is brilliant, desserts a must have, and if it weren't for the minor incident with the main course I would say Mekong is on its way to be the premier destination for all those Hyderabad foodies who seek a Pan Asian gastronomically satisfying journey!!!
