Break(the)fast at The Epicure

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and one can tell. Navni Kumar pecks at a bit of everything and narrates her experience.

We’re usually on the run to get to work on time, which often leads to skipping the day’s most important meal. Maybe that’s why the prospect of going for a breakfast buffet had me all geared up and excited early- read 10 am- in the morning. The thought of bacon is what kept me going as more and more people boarded the metro, squashing me like a fly against one of the walls. After all the hardships, I finally reached Fraser Suites- a giant glass building in Mayur Vihar.

By 10:30 am, people had wound up with breakfast. However, the buffet at The Epicure (the restaurant) was still around, so we got a chance to dig into it all. The variety can be overwhelming and chances are you won’t be able to try everything. We started with crispy bacon, pork and chicken sausages, hash browns and baked beans- all of which were still warm. Toasted brown bread can be asked for at any point. But the best part came after this: the cold cuts and the cheeses.

The cold cut platter was the star of the buffet for me: smoked salmon, pepperoni, smoked chicken and a variety of other meats sat atop crushed ice. A dollop of pesto sauce on the fresh meats enhanced the taste- we just had to close our eyes and focus only on the taste for a minute. We wished we could eat the chewy mildly spicy pepperoni, the tender smoky chicken and the melt-in-the-mouth smoked salmon for breakfast every day. Much like the 5 star ad, we did get lost for a minute there. The cheese platter consisted of a variety of Indian and French cheeses- the Gouda in particular was very good: the orange flaky sweet and salty cheese had us craving a glass of wine, even in the morning. We, however settled for some freshly squeezed mixed fruit juice, which proved to be a surprisingly adequate substitute.

As we finished the pile on our plates, we were already wondering what to move on to next. The egg counter seemed like a good bet, so we ordered a masala omelette, which was fluffy and spicy. What this round did is sharpen our resolve to get to the sweet section of the buffet quick. Platters laden with kiwi, pomegranate, apples, pineapple and even dragon fruit welcomed us as we put together a little fruit salad on our plates. It’s only after this that we realized there was something for our sweet tooth as well and we made a beeline for the assorted cakes counter.

From an array of Danish pastries, muffins, marble cake, chocolate cake, we zeroed in on the carrot cake and a Danish, both of which were delicious.

We were glad that they hadn’t overdone this counter with frosted cakes. The dessert provided a light, yet final touch to the meal. Our bellies purring with satisfaction, we washed down breakfast with a cup of strong black tea. Feeling full and lazy, we headed out into the lobby, tempted to sink down into the sofas for a siesta.

Must try: Cold cuts, Cheese platter, sausages, carrot cake

Meal for two: Rs 1000 plus taxes.
